Celebrating the Unsung Heroes of Our Communities: National Public Works Week 2025

Honoring Public Works Professionals During National Public Works Week

National Public Works Week (NPWW) is an annual celebration held across North America to recognize the vital contributions of public works professionals. Scheduled for May 18-24, 2025, this week-long event highlights the importance of these dedicated individuals who play a crucial role in our daily lives. With over 32,000 members, the American Public Works Association (APWA) is at the forefront of this initiative, bringing attention to the infrastructure that supports our communities.

The Role of Public Works Professionals

Public works professionals are responsible for the planning, design, construction, management, and operation of essential infrastructure. They work behind the scenes to ensure that communities have reliable transportation systems, clean water supply, efficient waste management, and safe public spaces. This year’s NPWW theme, People, Purpose, Presence, encapsulates the dedication and commitment these professionals bring to their work each day.

While many may not recognize the contributions of public works until a service is disrupted, these individuals ensure our everyday life functions smoothly—from the moment we turn on the tap in the morning to when we flip the light switch at night. Public works is about improving quality of life for everyone, even if it's done quietly and without recognition.

APWA President, Dominick A. Longobardi, emphasized the significance of this week: "People often don’t realize that public works is impacting our lives continuously. This week is a platform for us to share our stories and demonstrate our commitment to making our communities vibrant places to live."

Celebrating NPWW Across North America

The celebration of NPWW is marked with various events nationwide, from resolutions by governors and city officials to community activities that engage the public in recognition of these professionals. Events may include parades, equipment displays, community picnics, and unique contests like naming a snowplow. These activities are aimed at fostering public awareness about the essential services provided by local public works.

Moreover, APWA CEO, Scott D. Grayson, CAE, stated, "NPWW is the highlight of my year. Observing the hard work that our public works professionals contribute reinforces the notion that if everything is functioning correctly, no one notices."

Recognizing and celebrating the contributions of public works professionals is as essential as the work they do. National Public Works Week is not just a time to commemorate their efforts, but also to educate the public about the significant role these individuals play in building and maintaining a sustainable future.
