Houston Maritime Center to Host Maritime Monday Event Featuring a Lecture and Art Opening

Houston Maritime Center's Special Maritime Monday Event

The Houston Maritime Center & Museum is set to host an engaging Maritime Monday event on September 8, 2025. This special occasion will feature a thought-provoking lecture by Dr. Bruce Race, a prominent urban designer, and an art opening for the exhibition titled "Maritime Time." With this event, the museum aims to reinforce its mission as a vibrant hub for maritime education and artistic expression.

Located at 2940 Riverby Rd., Suite #200, Houston, TX 77020, the museum recently relocated to this beautiful venue. The event will take place from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, allowing attendees to enjoy an evening that intersects environmental innovation with artistic endeavors.

Dr. Race, who serves as the Director of the Center for Sustainability and Resilience (CeSAR) at the University of Houston's Gerald D. Hines School of Architecture and Design, will kick off the evening with his lecture entitled "Legacy Maritime Districts, Placemaking, and Net Zero Targets." This presentation is particularly relevant as it addresses how Houston's maritime heritage can inform strategies for a sustainable future.

As a recognized leader in climate action and resilience planning, Dr. Race will share insights drawn from his extensive experience in community engagement and sustainable development. His research and projects, including the Smart Ship Channel initiative, highlight contemporary approaches to achieving net-zero energy and urban design, making his lecture a timely discussion ahead of Houston Energy and Climate Week.

Following Dr. Race's engaging lecture, attendees can explore the "Maritime Time" exhibition, which runs from August 23 to October 31, 2025. Presented in partnership with the Houston Visual Artist Network, the exhibition showcases the work of over a dozen local artists, each interpreting Houston's maritime essence through their unique visual perspectives. Artists featured in the exhibition include Liz Plaster, Ruby R Scott, Deborah Ellington, and many others who aim to convey the spirit of Houston's maritime heritage.

This dynamic event is free for the public, made possible by the benevolent support of Midway/East River. It presents an exclusive opportunity for participants to delve into Houston's maritime history, engage with influential voices in sustainability, and appreciate the talents of local artists within a culturally enriched environment.
