Experience the Essence of Edo in Asakusa with New Illumination Project

Discover the Charm of Asakusa Kannon Ura

Asakusa, known for its iconic Kaminarimon gate and the bustling Nakamise shopping street surrounding Senso-ji Temple, holds a lesser-known gem—the Kannon Ura area. This hidden side of Asakusa, located just north of the central temple, is fondly referred to by locals as “Kannon Ura,” meaning “behind the Kannon.” With a rich history, Kannon Ura boasts preserved geisha culture, quaint townhouses, traditional eateries, and a host of contemporary dining options. This tranquil space exudes the spirit of Edo while providing a refreshing contrast to the area's lively main attractions.

To further enhance this cultural hub, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is embarking on the “Asakusa Edo-style Creation Project,” aimed at revitalizing the atmosphere of wabisabi and Edo aesthetics. Historically, during the Edo period, Asakusa thrived as a premier entertainment district, with teahouses, restaurants, and kabuki theaters flourishing around Senso-ji Temple. Today, this project aims to promote the area as a leading international tourist destination, celebrating its Edo roots through vibrant street designs and cultural experiences.
