Gallery Tamenaga Hosts Exhibition of Paul Aizpiri, Celebrating 60 Years with Keiji Tamenaga

A Celebration of Art: Paul Aizpiri Exhibition at Gallery Tamenaga

From July 12 to August 17, 2025, Gallery Tamenaga will host a remarkable exhibition titled "Paul Aizpiri Exhibition, Nurtured by Art Dealer Keiji Tamenaga". This event marks the grand finale of the gallery's longstanding presence in Ginza, Tokyo, as it gears up for a relocation to Minami Aoyama, Antiques Street.

For over half a century since its establishment in 1969, Gallery Tamenaga has been a cornerstone in introducing exquisite artworks in Ginza. As the gallery prepares to bid farewell to this iconic location, this exhibition will spotlight the enduring artistic relationship between the gallery’s founder, Keiji Tamenaga (1932-2025), and the celebrated artist Paul Aizpiri (1919-2016). The exhibition will feature around 35 pieces spanning Aizpiri's prolific career, emphasizing artworks that radiate love and happiness.

When Gallery Tamenaga opened in Ginza, the recognition of European artists from the École de Paris and their contemporaries was at a nascent stage in Japan. Keiji Tamenaga took on the mission of introducing masterpieces by these artists to Japanese museums and collectors while simultaneously discovering and promoting modern creators. Paul Aizpiri was one of those featured artists. Their connection blossomed after they met in Paris in 1957, and Aizpiri had his first solo exhibition shortly after the gallery's inauguration in 1969. Over the years, the gallery has featured Aizpiri in over 60 solo shows and introduced more than 3,000 artworks to the public.

As Tamenaga frequently visited Aizpiri's studio, his artistic direction evolved, leading to a vibrant range of styles. By the 1980s, Aizpiri solidified a style characterized by rich colors and simple yet powerful forms. In his later years, his work transitioned to brighter themes filled with whimsical portrayals of people and bicycles soaring through the air, showcasing his boundless creativity. The global recognition Aizpiri now enjoys attests to the strong bond he shared with Tamenaga.

Throughout the years, the Tokyo location of Gallery Tamenaga has hosted around 30 exhibitions featuring Aizpiri's art, making this upcoming exhibition a pivotal moment in art history. We invite all art lovers to witness this incredible culmination of the gallery's journey.

About Paul Aizpiri

Born in Paris in 1919 to a sculptor father, Aizpiri began painting at an early age. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts at 17 and held his first solo exhibition in Paris at 24. His distinct, vibrant style matured with vigorous brushwork and a rich palette, earning him admiration from collectors worldwide. His works are housed in prestigious museums across France and Europe, including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and the Yamagata Museum in Japan, known for its vast collection of his pieces, notably seen in the fresco at Hotel New Otani in Tokyo and Hakata.

The Journey of Tamenaga and Aizpiri

Keiji Tamenaga first encountered Aizpiri in 1957, accompanied by renowned Japanese painter Tsuguharu Foujita. Although Tamenaga was just 25 at the time, their partnership flourished. Tamenaga established Gallery Tamenaga in 1969 and contracted Aizpiri for his very first exhibition, thereby initiating a prolific collaboration. By 2009, to celebrate Aizpiri's 90th birthday, Tamenaga organized a grand event that ushered in a new artistic direction characterized by motifs that expressed playful freedom, reflective of Aizpiri's artistic evolution.

Upcoming Relocation of Gallery Tamenaga

Following the closing of its Ginza location, Gallery Tamenaga will move to a new, larger venue on Antiques Street in Minami Aoyama in the fall of 2025. The new space will provide three times the exhibition area, setting the stage for the gallery's next chapter as an art hub. To celebrate the opening, a special exhibition will feature works by 20 contemporary artists affiliated with the gallery, making it an event not to be missed.
