State Street Investment Management Launches First Homegrown ETFs in Japan to Strengthen Investor Services

State Street Investment Management Unveils First Domestic ETFs in Japan

On November 19, 2025, State Street Investment Management, a branch of State Street Corporation headquartered in Boston, made headlines by successfully listing five domestic exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. This occasion marks a significant milestone as it introduces the first-ever domestic ETFs catered specifically for Japanese investors, representing a renewed commitment to the Japanese market. The firm aims to accelerate its business strategy aimed at both retail and institutional investors.

Commitment to the Japanese Market

Mitsuhiro Echizenya, President of State Street Investment Management Japan, expressed his excitement about launching the domestic ETFs. He stated, “We are thrilled to provide our first domestic ETFs, reflecting our focus on delivering world-class investment solutions tailored to the evolving needs of Japanese investors. Given the increasing demand for diverse, transparent, and cost-efficient investment solutions, we see this as a golden opportunity to expand our domestic product offerings with over 25 years of experience in Japan.”

A New Era in Investment Strategy

The newly listed ETFs are designed to provide low-cost access to diversified investment strategies while enriching the existing landscape of already listed ETFs and public investment trusts registered in Japan. Specifically, these products include:

1. State Street Spider Gold ETF (unhedged) - Ticker: 447A, Management Fee (Excluding Tax): 0.170%
2. State Street Spider Gold ETF (hedged) - Ticker: 448A, Management Fee (Excluding Tax): 0.170%
3. State Street Spider S&P 500® ETF (unhedged) - Ticker: 449A, Management Fee (Excluding Tax): 0.0275%
4. State Street Spider S&P 500® ETF (hedged) - Ticker: 450A, Management Fee (Excluding Tax): 0.0275%
5. State Street Spider S&P 500® High Dividend ETF (unhedged) - Ticker: 451A, Management Fee (Excluding Tax): 0.1060%

These new funds not only expand State Street's product lineup but also enhance the existing offerings of 32 public investment trusts and over 60 foreign ETFs registered in Japan.

Innovation in Gold Investment

Anna Paglia, Chief Business Officer at State Street Investment Management, commented, “The launch of our Gold ETFs signifies a new chapter in our history of innovation in gold investment, which began in 2004 through our partnership with the World Gold Council and the establishment of the SPDR® Gold Shares (GLD®). We are excited to deepen this partnership and offer new investment solutions in gold to Japanese investors.”

Joseph Cavato, Senior Market Strategist at the World Gold Council, added, “Gold plays a strategic role as an asset in a balanced portfolio, particularly in Japan, where inflationary pressures persist and monetary policy is at a turning point. Given gold's inherent stability, long-term return potential, and resilience in crises, it is expected that interest in the newly launched Gold ETFs will rise among investors seeking stable long-term performance.”

State Street's Global Reach

State Street Investment Management boasts a staggering $5.45 trillion in assets under management, making it the world’s fourth-largest asset management company. The firm has also been a pioneer in ETF innovation across markets in the U.S., Hong Kong, Australia, and Singapore.

Conclusion

This major development not only signals State Street's ongoing commitment to Japan but also reinforces its role in advancing investment solutions that cater to the distinct preferences of Japanese investors. By expanding its offerings through domestically focused ETFs, State Street is setting a strong precedent for other international firms. As they enhance their influence in the Japanese investment landscape, these ETFs stand to significantly change how local investors approach diversification and wealth management, marking an exciting new era in the country's investment atmosphere.
