Addressing Rising Logistics Costs with Enhanced AI
As logistics and packaging costs soar, Japan-based ROMS Inc. has stepped forward with an innovative solution aimed at mitigating these rising expenses. ROMS specializes in providing automation solutions to logistics warehouses and factories, and their latest enhancement to the 'Packing Assist AI' service promises to streamline packaging operations while reducing costs significantly.
The Growing Challenge in the Logistics Industry
Currently, the logistics industry is grappling with severe challenges due to the 2024 problem and soaring raw material prices, including a sharp increase in the cost of cardboard. As shipping costs mount, optimizing packaging has become a critical focus for businesses seeking to minimize excess space in shipments. Recognizing the industry's struggles, ROMS has launched an initiative to standardize packaging operations through AI, allowing businesses to save on cardboard and shipping costs.
The
Packing Assist AI was developed in April 2025 in response to the needs voiced by customers. A significant feature of this tool is its ability to automatically estimate box sizes using product names or JAN codes sourced from the internet, making it easier for companies to implement accurate packaging practices without the hassle of maintaining complex size master data.
Enhancing Functionality with Feedback Features
One of the standout upgrades is the fortified
feedback feature. This allows operators on the ground to record the chosen box sizes against the AI's recommendations, enabling the system to learn from real-time choices. By registering available box sizes, the AI can refine its recommendations based on which boxes were actually used as opposed to those suggested. This real-world feedback significantly strengthens the AI's learning process, which adapts to the unique packaging rules of each location.
In addition to feedback, ROMS is developing a
reporting function to visualize the use and fill rates of various box sizes. This will aid businesses in identifying sizes that are rarely used, facilitating better inventory management and better purchasing strategies.
Notably, to encourage broad adoption, ROMS is implementing a pay-per-use model, with minimal upfront costs (approximately 5 yen per shipment), enabling businesses to start using the service within three business days.
Demonstrations and Trade Show Participation
For businesses considering the implementation of
Packing Assist AI, ROMS is hosting various demonstration events to showcase the tool’s capabilities and the advantages of its integration. Regular online seminars are available, and personal consultations can be scheduled. Additionally, demonstrations are available at the Peace Island Lab located in Ota, Tokyo.
Upcoming Exhibitions
In addition to demonstrations, ROMS will participate in several trade shows, including:
- - February 12-13, 2026: Logistics Solutions Fair 2026 (organized by JILS)
- - March 3-6, 2026: Retail Tech Japan (hosted by Nikkei)

Product Overview: Packing Assist AI
Packing Assist AI integrates 3D packing simulation with AI technology to completely eliminate ambiguity in box selection. It not only recommends optimal box sizes with remarkable accuracy but also visually guides users on how and in what order products should be packed using 3D visual instructions. Unlike conventional optimization software that demands pre-registered product size data, this innovative solution eliminates that barrier by automatically estimating sizes from product names or JAN codes, making it readily applicable even in dynamic environments.
With capabilities such as displaying instructions for individual items and lightweight items, the tool ensures that even new staff can achieve the quality of experienced workers right from day one. Previous cases have reported shipping cost reductions between 10 and 30 yen per shipment, alongside decreased labor hours related to packaging decisions.
