Exploring the 2026 Bologna Children's Book Fair Illustration Exhibition in Itabashi

2026 Bologna International Illustration Exhibition: A Showcase of Global Children's Book Art

The Itabashi Art Museum is set to host the esteemed 2026 Bologna International Illustration Exhibition, attracting worldwide attention for its celebration of children's literature and illustration. This exhibition features a remarkable collection of award-winning illustrations from a variety of themes and mediums, allowing visitors to enjoy the artistic diversity that children's books inspire.

One of the highlights includes a special section dedicated to new works by Maria Haiduk, a young talent from Ukraine who, at just 19, received the prestigious Bologna SM Publishing Award in 2025. This award is known for recognizing and promoting emerging illustrators under the age of 35, providing them not only with accolades but also the opportunity to publish their works through Spain's SM Publishing.

In addition to artwork displays, the exhibition will feature a series of engaging events such as lectures, workshops, and interactive sessions designed to immerse a wide audience in the cultural realm of children's books. This initiative is part of Itabashi’s broader plan to reinforce its identity as a 'Children's Book Town,' a designation supported through various projects related to children's literature.

The Bologna International Illustration Exhibition has a storied history; it was first held in Itabashi in 1981 and has since fostered a rich cultural exchange with Bologna, Italy. This year marks a significant milestone as the event celebrates its 60th anniversary. With submissions from 94 countries and regions totaling 4,158 artworks, the exhibition features 75 selected artists hailing from 33 different nations, including seven from Japan, showcasing the global nature of this artistic competition.

As part of this cultural celebration, from July 18 to August 16, 2026, the Itabashi Children’s Book and Design Festival will also debut. This festival promises to captivate attendees with artistic workshops and presentations focused on the intersection of children's literature and design.

The exhibition is scheduled to run from July 8, 2026, to August 16, 2026, and will be open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last admission at 4:30 PM. Guests can enjoy access to the exhibition for a modest fee of ¥900 for adults, ¥600 for university students, and free for high school students and younger. Special discounts are available for seniors aged 65 and older, as well as for individuals with disabilities.

Special Exhibitions, Lectures, and Workshops

The exhibition will not only feature outstanding illustrations but also special displays such as Maria Haiduk’s new publication, alongside original artwork from two award-winning Japanese children's books recognized by the Bologna Ragazzi Award (BRAW). Various speakers connected to the world of children's literature will participate in talks and lectures, providing insights into the field. In addition, hands-on workshops led by industry professionals will be offered for aspiring illustrators and middle school and high school students interested in creating their own picture books, as well as workshops for children focused on artistic techniques.

This year's Bologna SM Publishing Award further emphasizes Bolgona's commitment to nurturing new talent in illustration, celebrating the creativity and innovation that characterizes children's literature. The Bologna Ragazzi Award, another highlight of the Bologna Children's Book Fair, showcases outstanding works across various categories including both fiction and non-fiction, highlighting the best in published children’s books.

The Bologna International Illustration Exhibition is thus not only an art exhibit; it's a celebration of the rich interplay between art and literature that sparks creativity in young minds and celebrates stories from diverse cultures. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with the world of children's books, art, and creativity, and join us at the Itabashi Art Museum to experience the magic firsthand.
