Tokyo West International School Launches Global Educator Program
In a significant move to address the growing demand for skilled educators in Japan, Tokyo West International School, located in Hachioji City, has announced the establishment of the TWIS Global Educator Program (GEP). This initiative aims to foster talent in international education by providing a unique pathway for individuals to obtain necessary qualifications while gaining practical experience.
Background and Need for the Program
The Japanese education system has been facing a severe shortage of teachers, particularly within the international school sector. This shortage emphasizes the need for educators who not only possess strong English skills but also have a deep understanding of multicultural environments and practical teaching abilities. This dire situation has led Tokyo West International School to adopt an innovative approach towards educator training.
The institution's philosophy promotes the idea that rather than merely recruiting educators, it is crucial to cultivate them. By merging theoretical knowledge acquired from universities with hands-on experience gained within the school environment, the TWIS GEP aims to develop a new model for nurturing educators.

Insights from the Chairman
Yoshinori Kato, the Chairman of the school, shared his insights on the establishment of the GEP:
“Having been involved in the establishment and management of various international schools for over 20 years, I have come to realize that highly skilled international educators cannot emerge solely from academic learning or solely from on-the-job experience. They need to continuously engage with diverse cultural backgrounds among students, parents, and staff. This program is designed to cultivate educators capable of evolving in such rich environments.”
Enrollment for the First Cohort
The application process for the inaugural cohort will begin on June 1, 2027, with a submission deadline set for October 31, 2027, and the program is scheduled to commence in April 2028.
