A Record-Breaking Quarter for RIA M&A: ECHELON Partners Unveils Impressive Second Quarter Stats
ECHELON Partners Reports Record Activity in RIA M&A
In a significant disclosure from ECHELON Partners, the firm's latest 2Q 2026 RIA M&A Deal Report reveals that the wealth management sector has experienced its most successful second quarter to date, with 120 transactions and a staggering $378 billion in assets under management transacted. Although this reflects a slight decline from the first quarter's record-breaking 142 deals, it still surpasses the same quarter last year by 17.6%. In total, 262 deals were registered in the first half of 2026, marking it as the most active opening half-year on record.
Key Insights from the Report
Transaction Volume and Market Dynamics
The report indicates a smart moderation in transaction volume, yet illustrates a continuous upward trend in the industry's total monetary value. Private equity firms drove this surge, completing 75.8% — or 91 — of the transactions during the quarter, a record high. This transition suggests a shift in the market where well-capitalized buyers pursue larger assets, with the average AUM per transaction nearing $2 billion.
Dan Seivert, CEO and Managing Partner at ECHELON, noted, "The key takeaway isn’t merely the drop in volume from a record peak; instead, it's that we still recorded the strongest second quarter in history. Activity is consolidating among a select group of financially robust buyers." Notably, the median size of targets increased to $733 million, indicating buyers' readiness to pay premiums for high-quality assets.
Major Industry Trends
As large firms fortify their positions in the market, the competition for transactions grows fiercer. Data shows that only 10.8% of acquisitions in Q2 involved buyers with limited previous M&A activity. With seasoned players dominating the market, first-time acquirers face increasingly high barriers to entry. Seivert emphasized that successful acquisitions now demand substantial scale, integrated offerings, and competitive pricing.
The report also highlighted that technology acquisitions significantly rose, with 40 tech-focused deals completed, indicating a trend where firms perceive tech capabilities not just as enhancements, but as crucial components for competitive success.
Future Outlook for RIA M&A Activity
Looking ahead, ECHELON Partners foresees that the year could witness approximately 500 M&A transactions, surpassing the 2025 record of 466 deals. A mix of persistent demand from private equity-backed buyers and planned capital raises signal robust conditions for ongoing consolidation in the wealth management sector. Seivert concluded optimistically, stating, "Each indicator points toward 2026 becoming the most dynamic year we've ever seen in this industry."
