Instylla's Embrace® Hydrogel Embolic System Receives FDA Approval
In a groundbreaking announcement,
Instylla, Inc., a private company specializing in resorbable embolics for vascular procedures, has received FDA approval for its
Embrace® Hydrogel Embolic System (HES). This revolutionary system is now deemed safe for use in the embolization of peripheral arterial bleeds, particularly in vessels measuring 6 mm or less. This approval is a significant extension of its previous permission for treating hypervascular tumors, first granted in August 2025.
The approval was primarily based on results from the
HALT study, a large-scale, multicenter clinical trial that involved 130 patients from 22 sites across the United States. The findings revealed impressive metrics, including a 100% rate of freedom from major adverse events and a clinical success rate of 90% with no rebleeding from the targeted lesions within 30 days post-treatment.
Sean Boyle, CEO of Instylla, expressed that “Patients facing complex vascular conditions need more options. Embrace HES was built to deliver that versatility.” This approval marks a pivotal transformation in interventional care, offering dynamic solutions for various vascular conditions.
The Embrace HES system is distinct for several critical reasons. It provides a tailored approach to embolization, allowing medical professionals to achieve either distal or proximal embolization with just one embolic agent. This flexibility enables doctors to adjust the treatment according to individual patient anatomy, ensuring both effectiveness and safety.
Additionally, one of the key advantages of the Embrace system is its non-adhesive hydrogel formulation which eliminates the risk of catheter entrapment, sets a new precedent in embolization. This feature minimizes non-target embolization and preserves microcatheter access post-embolization, enabling practitioners to maintain access for further procedural options.
Dr. Suvranu Ganguli, Chief of Interventional Radiology at Boston Medical Center and Principal Investigator of the HALT study, noted, “Embrace HES allows you to tailor your approach to the anatomy, achieving either distal or proximal embolization with a single embolic agent.” He emphasized the importance of control when treating arterial bleeds, suggesting that the precise delivery afforded by Embrace HES represents a significant advance over existing liquid embolics.
Hemorrhage remains one of the leading preventable causes of death following trauma, and the ability to effectively manage arterial bleeding can save lives in critical situations. The successes reported using the Embrace HES system could change the landscape of interventional radiology by offering practitioners a new tool to combat challenging bleeding scenarios.
Conventional embolic agents often rely on the body’s natural clotting mechanisms, which can be less effective, especially in patients with coagulopathies. The hydrogel’s unique formulation, along with its ability to create a sustained occlusion over time, makes Embrace HES a compelling choice for clinicians addressing arterial bleeding. It liquefies via hydrolysis over approximately 11 months, allowing for tailored treatment timelines.
With FDA approval now in place, Instylla aims to change how vascular conditions are managed, providing advanced and reliable treatment methods that aim to enhance patient outcomes significantly. As the company continues to innovate in the field of embolization, the Embrace HES system stands to redefine care standards for patients facing complex vascular challenges.
