Ahrefs Accelerates Expansion in Japan to Support Local Marketers with SEO and Marketing Intelligence

Ahrefs Accelerates Japan Expansion for Local Marketers

Ahrefs Pte. Ltd., headquartered in Singapore and led by CEO Dmitry Gerasimenko, has announced its intent to enhance its business in the Japanese market significantly. The company plans to establish a new Japan team by 2024, further strengthening its local operations to better support Japanese marketers.

This strategic expansion emphasizes direct communication with Japanese users through localized content and active engagement with user communities. Recently, Ahrefs CMO Tim Soulo visited Japan, participating in a user meetup in Tokyo alongside Takafumi Kawaharada, head of marketing for Japan.

Tim stated, “Japan has a high level of technological literacy, making it a mature market in website operation and digital marketing. Leveraging our platform powered by big data, we aim to provide Japanese marketers with deeper insights.” During his two-day trip, Tim engaged in numerous activities, including interviews and multiple meals with users, showcasing his commitment to understanding the local market.

Strengthening Local Support and Quick Product Improvements

Ahrefs has developed proprietary web crawlers and data centers that enable high-precision functions such as backlink analysis, keyword research, and competitive analysis. Recently, the company has evolved beyond simply being an SEO tool to become a sophisticated marketing intelligence platform.

Starting in 2024, Takafumi Kawaharada, who has extensive experience in localization of overseas SaaS services and understanding the Japanese market, will take on the role of marketing leader. He aims to accelerate the development of Japanese UI, blogs, and support content. Furthermore, Ahrefs will actively gather feedback through X (formerly Twitter) to adapt its products to user needs promptly.

Kawaharada emphasized the significance of complete Japanese-language functionality for user experience, saying, “We are ensuring all tools, blogs, help articles, and AI content support functions are fully localized. For the Japanese market, a seamless user experience in Japanese is indispensable. What sets Ahrefs apart is our culture of rapid response to user feedback. When users voice their requests, enhancements can be implemented by the following week.”

Supporting Brand Discoverability in the Age of Generative AI

Tim Soulo expressed Ahrefs' commitment to creating unique functions instead of imitating common practices. In the future, the company plans to broaden its reach among enterprise-level users and increase offline event participation to strengthen connections with the Japanese community. Although they will enhance AI-driven assistance, they remain cautious about auto-generated content, focusing on empowering users to enhance their communication skills through AI.

“Our team, including myself, does not endorse one-click generated AI content. Ahrefs is committed to providing users who seek actionable marketing ideas with genuinely useful and high-quality information,” he commented, clarifying the direction for their tools.

As Ahrefs continues to evolve beyond a mere SEO tool, they strive to serve as a marketing intelligence partner, aiming to maximize the online presence of companies and brands amid a data-rich environment. In line with this, they have introduced a new feature,
