Promoting Sustainable Development Goals in Okayama
On May 31, 2026, Okayama University, under the umbrella of the Okayama SDGs Research Group, organized an event called the "Okayama Prefecture Hometown Future Co-Creation Board Game Mission Card Selection Meeting in Tsuyama." Hosted at the Tsuyama Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the event focused on high school students from the northern regions of Okayama Prefecture. It is a continuation of a previous selection meeting held on March 26, aimed at middle and high school students, which successfully brought together a mix of students and educators to engage in meaningful discussions.
A total of 15 participants, including one elementary school student and accompanying teachers, gathered for this event. The board game they worked on is designed to educate young people about social issues using various case studies related to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Currently, the Okayama SDGs Research Group is in the process of developing the Okayama version of the board game, aspiring to create a local version that reflects the unique challenges and solutions of the region.
In addition to high school students from Tsuyama and the Takahashi region, representatives from various sectors, including local businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, and financial organizations, came together to support the event. As in March, a facilitator from Chugoku Bank, who plays an essential role in the board game's development, led the meeting, ensuring productive discussions.
The participants had the chance to experience the Hyogo-Kansai version of the board game before breaking into groups to discuss and recommend mission cards. The selected cards highlight specific initiatives targeting local issues in northern Okayama Prefecture. Each group actively debated their recommendations based on personal experiences, expanding their conversations to encompass global challenges. Ultimately, group representatives presented their top choices along with justifications, after which a collective vote determined the most favored cards. At the end of the day, participants were awarded certificates for their engagement in this collaborative activity.
The development of the "Okayama Prefecture Hometown Future Co-Creation Board Game" is not only intended to support the exploratory activities of middle and high school students but is also designed to be utilized in various settings including corporate and municipal training sessions. Completion of the game is expected around spring 2027, aligning with Okayama University’s commitment to fostering a sustainable future.
This initiative exemplifies Okayama University's open and innovative spirit as a core regional research institution.
