Fujikura Launches Revolutionary 1728-Core Air Blown WTC® Fiber Optic Cable

Fujikura's Innovative 1728-Core Air Blown WTC® Cable

Fujikura Ltd., under the leadership of President and CEO Naoki Okada, has recently announced the development and market launch of its new air-blown, thin, high-density fiber optic cable known as the "1728-Core Air Blown WTC®". This product is equipped with Fujikura's proprietary technology that allows for multi-core fusion splicing using the 12-core Spider Web Ribbon® (SWR®), and is now part of the Wrapping Tube Cable® (WTC®) lineup.

Background of the Development

As the demand for ultra-multicore WTC® cables has surged within data centers, there has been an increased need for fiber optic cables to connect established data centers inter-site—this is referred to as Data Center Interconnections (DCI). With Fujikura's ongoing advancements in rapid deployment of Air Blown WTC® technology capable of creating high-speed and high-capacity networks, the increased demand for data transmission in hyperscale data centers underscored the necessity for a robust solution.

In response to these market needs, Fujikura introduced the 1728-Core Air Blown WTC®, designed to cater to the rising volume of data transmission required for DCI applications.

Key Features of the 1728-Core Air Blown WTC®

The 1728-Core Air Blown WTC® is a high-density fiber optic cable that can be installed using air-blown techniques, significantly reducing installation time. Leveraging design technology developed during the creation of the 864-Core Air Blown WTC®, Fujikura has optimized the cable's dimensions for enhanced performance. Despite its thinner and lighter profile compared to outdoor SWR®/WTC® cables of the same core count, it maintains crucial mechanical properties necessary for air-blown installation.

Notably, the cable has been tested using microducts, confirming its ability to be installed over distances of up to 1,000 meters via blown methods. The achievement of 1728 cores—double that of the previous maximum of 864 cores—enables a reduction in the number of installations required for the same distance, contributing to both economic viability and efficiency in network construction.
