Oberkotter Foundation Launches New Grant to Enhance Pediatric Hearing Access

New Grant from Oberkotter Foundation to Enhance Pediatric Hearing Services

The Oberkotter Foundation has recently made headlines with its announcement of a new funding opportunity aimed at improving access to crucial hearing screening and diagnostic services for children. With the foundation’s commitment to improving pediatric hearing healthcare, this call for project proposals seeks to bring necessary services closer to families, particularly those facing various barriers in accessing timely assistance.

In a statement released on October 1, 2026, the foundation emphasized the significance of reaching out to families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Through this initiative, they aim to provide essential auditory healthcare services that play a vital role in children's early auditory experiences, crucial for the development of listening and spoken language skills. However, statistics highlight a concerning reality; only about 40% of children who fail newborn hearing screenings receive recommended follow-up diagnostic evaluations by three months of age, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For many families across the United States, a multitude of factors can hinder prompt access to these tests and interventions. Geographic location, socioeconomic status, and the design of the healthcare system itself often lead to significant delays. Dr. Teresa H. Caraway, the executive director of the Oberkotter Foundation, pointed out the remarkable advancements made in pediatric hearing care alongside the persistent challenge of ensuring access to these services for families in need. "The expansion of service delivery models to facilitate access to hearing screenings and related services offers opportunities to better support families and help children reach their full potential," explained Dr. Caraway.

The current grant initiative is specifically designed to support projects that either establish or expand service delivery models to provide access to hearing screening and/or diagnostic services. By identifying families facing challenges in accessing healthcare, the foundation intends to ensure timely diagnosis and support for children with hearing loss.

Nonprofit organizations with experience in early childhood hearing loss and social factors influencing health access are encouraged to apply. The application window is open from October 1 to November 30, 2026, with selected candidates expected to be notified by March 2027. This initiative reflects the foundation’s strategic commitment to enhancing national access to pediatric auditory healthcare as well as to “Listening and Spoken Language” (LSL) services.

Dr. Andrea Dunn, vice president of programs at the Oberkotter Foundation, reinforced the foundation's belief that improving healthcare access through community-based solutions can greatly benefit children. "Data show that approaches bringing healthcare outside traditional clinical settings and closer to families can improve service utilization, reduce loss to follow-up, and enable earlier diagnoses of hearing loss," she stated.

The Oberkotter Foundation's unwavering vision is to ensure that all families of children with hearing loss have timely access to screening and diagnostic services, comprehensive information, and appropriate intervention services. By showcasing this new grant opportunity, the foundation hopes to enhance access to pediatric hearing healthcare nationwide and provide essential support to families navigating these challenges.
