Satio's Innovative Drug Delivery System



Satio, Inc. has made a significant leap in healthcare technology by successfully completing the development and testing of an innovative at-home drug delivery system. This pioneering project fulfills the terms of a contract awarded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) and illustrates a promising solution for patients managing chronic illnesses.

The newly developed SatioRx device employs a unique approach to deliver medications using a hollow microneedle (HMN) array, ensuring precise and stable administration. Its design features a reusable motor-driven applicator paired with a cost-effective disposable element that contains essential components like a drug cartridge, adhesive patch, and sensors. This flexibility allows the device to accommodate a wide range of drug sizes, from 1mL to 5mL, enhancing its versatility in patient care.

One of the challenges that patients face regarding chronic diseases is the necessity for frequent injections, often requiring travel to medical facilities. The SatioRx system addresses this issue by offering a remotely controllable injection method, striving to avoid the need for patients to travel for their medication. This not only alleviates the burden of recurring visits but also provides an innovative route of administration that capitalizes on the efficacy of intradermal delivery, particularly appealing to those with needle fears.

The innovative drug delivery system leverages advanced internal mechanisms, controlled motors, and pressure sensors, making it capable of administering various drug types, even those with high viscosities, with improved effectiveness compared to traditional autoinjectors. Users previously reliant on existing autoinjector models now have a more comprehensive solution available through SatioRx, particularly as these traditional devices often lack the capability to handle higher drug volumes or different viscosity medications effectively.
