New GEM Report 2025 Edition Published

Sophia University’s UNESCO Chair has proudly translated the latest regional edition of the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report 2024/2025, titled "East Asia: Leadership for Technology." This translation not only makes the report accessible to Japanese readers but also serves as a crucial resource for various stakeholders in the education sector, including policymakers, academic institutions, and local communities.

The GEM Report is a UNESCO official publication that monitors educational developments in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This report aims to support all relevant partners in fulfilling their responsibilities while providing a comprehensive review of educational outcomes globally. The notable effort of translating this report into Japanese is a significant step towards delivering important educational insights in a linguistically diverse region.

The current regional edition analyzes the progress of educational digital transformation (DX) within Japan, China, and South Korea. It emphasizes the vital role that school leaders play in driving this transformation. The translation process was meticulously overseen by Miki Sugimura, the Chairholder and President of Sophia University, alongside Naoki Umenomiya, a professor at the Global Education Center. Both professionals, with their expertise in comparative international education, meticulously reviewed the content to ensure the translation accurately reflects the original report's intentions and analyses.

Insights from the Leadership

In her comments regarding the project, President Miki Sugimura expressed the significance of translating the GEM Report into Japanese. She noted that having the report available in multiple languages – including English, Chinese, and Korean – allows for a multidimensional approach to education, taking into account various regional contexts. The Sophia University UNESCO Chair is actively involved in promoting high-quality education while considering human dignity and peace as vital elements for sustainable future societies. She emphasized that the university would continue to engage in research and educational activities from diverse perspectives.

Professor Naoki Umenomiya also highlighted the report's global importance for educational stakeholders. He pointed out that the GEM Report discusses the crucial responsibilities of educational administration and school leadership in the context of rapid digital transformation in education across East Asia, including Japan. He expressed hope that the publication of the Japanese version would facilitate broader conversations among educators in Japan around these critical themes.
