Sakura Wada's Exhibition '□□' in Roppongi
Sakura Wada's solo exhibition titled '□□' is currently being held at Art Kabeefun Ka Paichu, a gallery-restaurant hybrid located in Roppongi, from June 19 to July 18, 2026. This exhibition is a collaborative initiative by The Chain Museum, with a focus on the theme of existence and interaction in art.
At '□□', Wada explores the fascinating symbol of the werewolf as an intermediary between humans and animals. This motif is central to a diverse range of new works that utilize various materials, including large canvas paintings, sculptures, embroidery, and for the first time, woodblock prints. Wada's distinctive style is characterized by its bright, pop-art visuals laced with subtle elements of humor and eeriness, reflecting on the power dynamics found within social communication.
The artist's work often challenges the conventional, one-sided experience of viewing art. Using a mix of formats such as installations and performances alongside painting, Wada aims to create an interactive dialogue between the viewer and the artwork, blurring the lines between reality and illusion, as well as the relationship between object and observer.
During the exhibition, visitors can expect not just an impressive showcase of art but also engaging activities, such as workshops and music events catered to both children and adults. These initiatives aim to foster a deeper understanding of the themes presented within the artworks, enhancing the overall experience.
As part of the exhibition, there will be a collaborative menu featuring special shaved ice desserts inspired by the artwork. Available during weekends, this culinary offering allows guests to immerse themselves in the exhibition's atmosphere while indulging in unique flavors that echo Wada's artistic vision. Featured is the special shaved ice named '□□', encased in a thin layer of agar, reflecting both visual and tactile experiences of the installation.
Artist Background
Sakura Wada, born in Kanagawa in 1999, is a promising young artist who graduated from Tokyo Zokei University in 2024. Since then, she has already held multiple solo exhibitions and has received various awards, including the Tomoko Yabumae Prize and the Tomio Koyama Prize at the ART AWARD TOKYO MARUNOUCHI 2024. Wada seamlessly integrates familiar materials such as fabric and embroidery into her artworks, creating installations and performances that draw from various artistic genres.
Her work encourages active and multi-dimensional viewing experiences, breaking away from traditional exhibition practices where artworks exist solely on walls. This approach enhances the dialogue between the viewer and the art piece, prompting a reflection on the dynamics of power and balance between individuals.
