Narayanan Parameswaran Appointed as Executive Vice President for Research at RFU

New Leadership at Rosalind Franklin University

Rosalind Franklin University (RFU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Narayanan (Nara) Parameswaran as its new Executive Vice President for Research, set to take effect on December 2, 2026. This strategic move aligns with RFU's ongoing commitment to advancing biomedical research and enhancing its community impact.

Dr. Parameswaran brings with him a wealth of experience in translational research, faculty development, and creating partnerships that bridge the gaps between healthcare, research institutions, and the community. According to RFU President Aron Sousa, MD, "Nara has a proven track record of fostering collaborations that directly connect research to healthcare and industry, alongside philanthropic endeavors. His leadership will undoubtedly strengthen our research enterprise, essential to RFU's core mission of enhancing the well-being of diverse populations."

Before joining RFU, Dr. Parameswaran served as the Senior Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Physiology at Michigan State University. In his role, he was responsible for overseeing substantial research activities across eight campuses, managing approximately $130 million in sponsored awards. His comprehensive approach included not just administrative tasks but also faculty advancement and infrastructure planning necessary for thriving research environments.

Dr. Parameswaran’s career has provided a rich understanding of the challenges academic research institutions face today, from securing competitive funding to navigating increasingly complex research landscapes. He is particularly dedicated to mentoring the next generation of scientists and building collaborative teams across disciplines.

Expressing his excitement about the new role, Dr. Parameswaran stated, "It is an honor to join Rosalind Franklin University as the Executive Vice President for Research. I eagerly look forward to collaborating with President Sousa, faculty, staff, and students in enhancing RFU’s research strengths, opening new pathways for innovation, and ensuring our research contributes significantly towards the university's mission."

His research background is notable, focusing on critical issues such as inflammation, innate immunity, and interactions between gut health and bone density. With over 95 peer-reviewed publications and continuous research funding from the National Institutes of Health and other partners, Dr. Parameswaran's extensive experience combines a scholarly understanding of research with insights into the necessary systems and collaborative efforts required for advancing successful programs.

President Sousa remarked on the exceptional breadth of Dr. Parameswaran's leadership experience and how it aligns with the opportunities available at RFU. "His ability to build effective research programs through collaborative efforts with academic, healthcare, and industry partners is a key asset for RFU, particularly in supporting translational and community-engaged research."

In line with RFU's mission, Dr. Parameswaran's abilities will bolster the university's research enterprise, which includes the Innovation and Research Park. This pioneering initiative fosters collaboration among academic and industry scientists as well as entrepreneurs, aimed at fostering innovation and practical research outcomes. Additionally, the Research Park houses Helix 51, RFU’s bioscience incubator designed for startup and early-stage life science companies.

Until Dr. Parameswaran’s arrival, Dr. Janice Urban will continue to lead as the interim Executive Vice President for Research, having been pivotal in guiding the university through the challenges posed by the current science funding landscape.

Dr. Parameswaran holds a Bachelor of Veterinary Science from Madras Veterinary College in India, a Master’s in Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology from The Ohio State University, and a PhD in Physiology from Michigan State University. His postdoctoral training occurred at Michigan State University and Thomas Jefferson University, further enriching his research acumen.
