Shutterstock's Q3 2026 Financial Report Reveals Significant Challenges and Changes

Shutterstock's Third Quarter 2026 Financial Results

On November 5, 2026, Shutterstock, Inc. (NYSE: SSTK) released its financial performance results for the third quarter, ending September 30, 2026. This was a crucial period for the company as it navigated various challenges in its content segment, leading to a noticeable impact on its financial standing.

Financial Overview

The company's revenue for the third quarter stood at $173.9 million, a decline of $86.2 million or 33% from $260.1 million in the same quarter the previous year. This downturn can be largely attributed to difficulties in attracting new customers, with the content revenue falling by 19% to $158.1 million, which constituted 91% of the total revenue.

A sharper drop was seen in the Data, Distribution, and Services segment, where revenue plunged by 76% from $65.7 million to $15.8 million, now making up only 9% of the overall revenue. This segment's earnings fluctuated based on the timing of metadata licensing deals, underscoring the volatility faced by Shutterstock's data services.

The overall financial health of Shutterstock suffered considerably, with a net loss of $197.8 million reported, contrasting sharply with a net income of $13.4 million in the prior year. This included a $195.6 million non-cash impairment charge associated with goodwill, putting additional pressure on the company's earnings per share, which fell to $5.35 from $0.37.

Operational Changes

Amidst these challenges, CEO Jon Oringer stressed the importance of operational discipline and cost management. The company effectively reduced product development and selling, general, and administrative (SGA) expenses by 30% year-on-year, saving approximately $39 million. Furthermore, the workforce was cut down by 16% as part of efforts to streamline operations and deal with economic pressures.

In light of the significant financial turbulence, Shutterstock also announced a transition in its financial leadership. Rik Powell, who previously served as CFO, stepped down, and Scott Grossman, Senior Vice President of Finance, will take over as Interim Chief Financial Officer. Oringer expressed appreciation for Powell's leadership during a tumultuous time for the company, including his temporary role as CEO earlier in the year.

AI and Future Growth

Shutterstock acknowledges the shifting landscape driven by artificial intelligence, which presents both challenges and opportunities. The company plans to leverage this transformation to enhance its creative content offerings and fortify its data capabilities. With the appointment of Hichame Assi as President and COO, there is a renewed emphasis on operational performance and strategic growth initiatives.

“This is a pivotal moment for us, and our commitment remains towards positioning Shutterstock for long-term success, utilizing our rich content library and strong market relationships,” Oringer stated.

Looking Ahead

As the company moves forward, it aims to implement annualized operating expense reductions totaling $60 million that were declared in earlier quarterly announcements. The plan is aimed not just at improving immediate financial stability but also about building resilience against future fluctuations in the market.

The key metrics following the third quarter depict a concerning trajectory with subscriber numbers dropping to 890,000 from 1,060,000 year-on-year, though the average revenue per customer saw improvement. Adjusted EBITDA for the quarter was recorded at $41.8 million, reflecting the steep decline from $79.4 million in Q3 2025.

Shutterstock's third quarter results paint a picture of a company in transition, grappling not just with economic realities but also actively adjusting its operational strategies in light of evolving market conditions. This strategic focus is hoped to enable Shutterstock to not only weather the challenges ahead but also to thrive in the expanding realm of creative content fueled by technology advancements.
