Electronic System Design Industry Achieves $5.1 Billion Revenue Growth in Q3 2024

A Record-Breaking Quarter for the Electronic System Design Industry

The Electronic System Design (ESD) industry has marked an impressive milestone in the third quarter of 2024, as reported by the ESD Alliance, a part of the SEMI Technology Community. The reported revenue surged by 8.8% year-over-year, reaching an astounding $5,114.5 million. This figure shows a solid increase from the $4,702.4 million recorded in the same quarter the previous year.

Significant Growth in the EDA Sector

According to Walden C. Rhines, Executive Sponsor of the SEMI Electronic Design Market Data report, the electronic design automation (EDA) sector has demonstrated remarkable revenue growth. Categories like Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) and services experienced double-digit growth percentages, while the revenues for Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) and Multi-Chip Modules (MCMs), along with Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP), also saw positive growth.

One standout statistic from the report is the revenue from CAE, which skyrocketed by 16% to hit $1,922.2 million. Moreover, the four-quarter moving average for CAE has also increased by 14.5%, showcasing a consistent upward trend. In contrast, the Integrated Circuit (IC) Physical Design and Verification segment experienced a slight decline, with revenues dropping by 5.5% to $854.4 million; however, its four-quarter moving average climbed by 4.3%.

Regional Breakdown of Revenue

Looking at the geographical distribution, the Americas lead with $2,325.4 million in revenue from electronic system design products and services, marking a 17.2% increase from the same quarter in 2023. Both Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) also showed significant growth with a revenue increase of 17.1%, totaling $645.6 million. This regional success illustrates the expanding global reach of the ESD industry. Japan reported a decline of 3.5% to $298.5 million, although it saw a 7.6% increase in its four-quarter moving average. Conversely, Asia Pacific (APAC) faced a minor decrease of 0.7%, totaling $1,845 million yet also exhibiting robust growth in its four-quarter moving average of 10.6%.

Employment Trends in the ESD Sector

On the employment front, the companies surveyed in the EDMD report employed a total of 62,417 individuals worldwide in Q3 2024, reflecting a 4.5% growth from the 59,737 figure reported in the same quarter of the previous year. Nevertheless, this headcount is a slight dip of 1.2% from the previous quarter.

Conclusion

This quarterly report not only highlights the vibrant health of the Electronic System Design industry but also serves as a meaningful indicator of the overall technology sector's growth trajectory. The ESD Alliance emphasizes the importance of these advancements as they continue to advocate for the EDA community and promote collaborative efforts across the industry.
