YAMATO Lab. Hosts Its First Popup Event at Isetan Shinjuku

YAMATO Lab., a notable project by YAMATO, a kimono specialty store established in 1917, is set to hold its first-ever popup event at Isetan Shinjuku. The event will take place from August 6 to August 12, 2025, at the Men's Building, 1st floor, The Stage. This week-long event aims not only to showcase the innovative work of YAMATO Lab. but also to offer attendees the opportunity to purchase exclusive items.

Established in the Autumn of 2023 under the creative direction of Keisuke Kanda, YAMATO Lab. strives to explore and express the beauty and potential of Japanese culture through fashion. The project has already introduced unique creations, including the "Yukata Utsunagi," which revitalizes traditional yukatas used in Japanese inns, and the Sukajan Kimono, merging the traditional souvenir jacket with kimono aesthetics. This popup will further extend their exploration into Japan’s rich cultural fabric.

What to Expect at the Event

During the popup event, YAMATO Lab. will highlight their ongoing projects and present items previously unveiled. A special collection commemorating the event will also be available. Noteworthy products include the Sukajan Kimono series, featuring jackets made from vintage kimonos, artistically patched together and embroidered with scenes depicting Shinjuku, including its stunning temples and gardens. Other items such as a bowling shirt made from reimagined vintage fabric, alongside half-pants, furoshiki (wrapping cloths), and drawstring bags from the Utsunagi series, will be available for purchase as well.

On the opening day, August 6, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM, a demonstration of the unique yokoburi (side embroidery) technique will showcase the intricate craftsmanship of creating embroidery depicting Shinjuku's landscape. This is a rare chance for attendees to witness the artistry up close. Additionally, for those who spend over 30,000 yen, an original fan commemorating the event will be gifted.

Every item crafted by YAMATO Lab. reflects a blend of over 109 years of heritage and innovation, inviting everyone to experience the ongoing evolution of kimono culture and craftsmanship.
