EQT's Acquisition of A-Train Enhances High-Speed Rail Link in Sweden

EQT to Acquire A-Train for Enhanced Rail Services

EQT, through its Active Core Infrastructure I fund, has announced the acquisition of 100% ownership of A-Train AB, the company operating the Arlanda express high-speed rail service in Sweden. This acquisition aims to strengthen the rail link between Stockholm Central Station and Arlanda Airport, significantly reducing travel time to just 18 minutes.

The Arlanda express is vital for Greater Stockholm's 2.5 million residents, connecting the city with the largest airport in Sweden. A-Train operates its services under a public-private partnership with the Swedish state, which grants it rights to the rail link until 2050. EQT's investment highlights its commitment to enhancing the customer experience and operational efficiency of A-Train, ensuring that it remains a reliable transportation option for locals and tourists alike.

Focus on Customer Experience and Accessibility

EQT's plan involves introducing a new pricing model that prioritizes accessibility and affordability. By improving the utilization of existing train capacity, they aim to make the service more user-friendly and appealing to a broader audience. The goal is to foster a deeper connection with travelers, thereby enhancing their overall experience when using the Arlanda express.

In addition to improving pricing structures, EQT is dedicated to maximizing safety standards for both passengers and employees of A-Train. The robust operational improvements expected will not only ensure efficiency but will also promote sustainable transport solutions in the region.

Upgrading Train Fleet and Infrastructure

Central to EQT's strategy is a SEK 3 billion investment in a brand-new fleet of high-speed trains anticipated to be operational by 2030. This upgrade is expected to enhance seating capacity by over 50%, allowing A-Train to cater to a growing number of passengers as demand continues to rise. Kunal Koya, a Partner at EQT Active Core Infrastructure, emphasizes the importance of this development, stating that they are thrilled to support A-Train’s ongoing journey in providing high-quality services.

The collaboration is seen as a way to promote sustainable mobility solutions. Past experiences in supporting transport companies, such as Nordic Ferry Infrastructure and Hector Rail, will inform EQT's approach in working with A-Train. EQT aims to adopt a long-term ownership strategy that genuinely benefits the community and aligns with the company’s ethos of promoting essential services.

Long-Term Goals and Collaborations

EQT is also keen on expanding partnerships with airlines and travel providers, which is expected to enhance connectivity and bolster business for A-Train. By working together with A-Train’s management and workforce, EQT anticipates fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation that ultimately leads to a more robust service offering.

Magnus Zetterberg, CEO of A-Train, expressed excitement regarding EQT's acquisition, emphasizing a shared vision for enhancing customer experience. He highlights the importance of maintaining A-Train’s status as the most reliable transportation link between Stockholm and Arlanda Airport as they embark on this new chapter.

The acquisition is pending customary regulatory approvals and is projected to transform the landscape of high-speed rail service in Sweden. As this partnership unfolds, the focus remains on delivering a superior experience for millions of travelers, affirming reliability and efficiency in the transport sector.
