The 7th Meeting of Light Nexus Held at Okayama University – Bridging Knowledge and Future Through Light Research

The 7th Meeting of Light Nexus at Okayama University

On February 2, 2026, Okayama University, located in Okayama City and led by President Yasuyuki Nasu, hosted the 7th meeting of the Light Nexus at the KIBINOVE Co-Creation Innovation Lab on its Tsushima campus. This meeting followed the previously held sixth meeting and is part of an overarching initiative aimed at fostering collaboration among researchers utilizing light as a pivotal research tool.

The Light Nexus serves as a hub for researchers from diverse fields to come together, aiming to generate new research themes and expand their applications. This meeting featured guest speakers from outside the university, leading to insightful presentations and engaging discussions involving 22 participants, including faculty, students, URA members, coordinators in academia-business collaboration, and others from various research centers.

The gathering commenced with opening remarks from Professor Nobuko Fukuda of the Institute of Nature Science and Environmental Science, who highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary research. Following this, Professor Mina Han from Kongju National University in South Korea delivered a lecture titled "Design of Light-Responsive Fluorescent Azo Dyes: From Spherical to 1D and 2D Assemblies." Her presentation focused on the innovative development of new fluorescent materials based on azobenzene that change shape in response to light.

During her lecture, Professor Han discussed successful strategies for creating various nanostructures such as spherical, linear (1D), and planar (2D) forms through meticulous molecular design and solvent manipulation. The session concluded with a vibrant Q&A segment, where attendees actively engaged in discussions about the implications and future applications of her findings.

The Light Nexus aims to be an open platform not only for researchers focused on light but also for those eager to embrace new challenges or connect across disciplines. This initiative signifies Okayama University's commitment to becoming a core research university with unique characteristics, paving the way for groundbreaking collaborations and innovations.

Future Aspirations

The university emphasizes sustained engagement in research that impacts society and deeper exploration within the scientific community. Okayama University aspires to become a leading institution recognized for its contributions to advancing knowledge about light and its applications in various fields. Participants and stakeholders are encouraged to keep an eye on further developments in this innovative pathway. Moreover, community engagement remains a crucial aspect of this endeavor, with expectations for future joint research efforts that align with the sustainable development goals globally.

As a pioneering research university, Okayama University is well-positioned to lead initiatives that foster collaborative innovation in science and technology with potential impacts on environmental sustainability and other critical issues facing society today.
