Sendai to Host First International ME/CFS Awareness Day Event on May 10th

First International ME/CFS Awareness Day Event in Sendai

On May 10th, Sendai will host its very first ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) Awareness Day event, initiated by the social brand, SENDAI IZUI & Go. This event aims to promote understanding of this often-overlooked illness, which impacts thousands in Japan and millions globally.

The event is inspired by the Blue Hour Project, a campaign involving community members coming together for awareness and support, coinciding with the dreams fostered by April Dream. With ME/CFS Awareness Day celebrated on May 12th—Florence Nightingale's birthday—the event will shine a light on the struggles faced by those with the condition and celebrate community connection.

Understanding ME/CFS

ME/CFS is a debilitating condition characterized by extreme fatigue, muscle pain, and cognitive difficulties, and is estimated to affect about 100,000 to 300,000 people in Japan alone. Despite its prevalence, awareness remains alarmingly low. Many patients experience debilitating symptoms, leaving them unable to work or even leave their homes, akin to having the energy levels of seriously ill individuals.

During this event in Sendai, attendees will engage in stimulating activities designed to foster a deeper understanding of ME/CFS, from documentary screenings to interactive workshops. Individuals from healthcare, education, and urban planning sectors are particularly encouraged to attend, as the goal is to promote awareness and discussions about ways to support those suffering from this condition.

Event Details

The event will feature:
  • - Part 1: A 90-minute documentary showcasing the lives of ME/CFS patients and their daily struggles, followed by an informative session about the condition.
  • - Part 2: An interactive workshop, including quizzes and an IZUI card exchange game, aimed at educating participants in a fun and engaging manner.

Additionally, attendees can browse informational panels and purchase special merchandise, including original Nightingale T-shirts designed to promote awareness. Participants are also encouraged to dress in blue, the awareness color associated with ME/CFS, transforming the venue into a sea of blue in solidarity.

Schedule

The day will commence at 1:00 PM with registration, followed by the first part at 1:30 PM. After the documentary screening, there will be a break at 3:15 PM, leading into the workshop and closing reception until 5:00 PM.

This event not only aims to raise awareness about ME/CFS but also emphasizes the importance of understanding and supporting those affected by chronic illness. Proceeds from merchandise sales will further fund the ongoing efforts of SENDAI IZUI & Go. to advocate for this cause.

As the representative for the Blue Hour Project, I express my sincere wish for greater societal awareness around ME/CFS. Having faced this condition myself since 2004, I have witnessed firsthand the dire need for recognition and support. I am grateful to the organizers and volunteers who have come together to make this event a reality.
