Collaborative Development Project Brings New Local Products to Shiojiri City

Innovative Local Products: A Shiojiri City Initiative

In an exciting era of collaboration, Shiojiri City in Nagano Prefecture has embarked on a groundbreaking project with Nihon University and Trust Bank. This initiative aims to create two unique local products reflecting the city's rich resources and culture, marking a significant milestone in community engagement and sustainable development.

Background of the Collaboration

Shiojiri City, known for its diverse resources such as wine and agricultural products, faces challenges related to a shortage of industry players and the need to connect with younger generations. To address these issues, in September 2025, the city and Trust Bank signed an agreement to develop products that utilize local resources while also encouraging sustainable economic growth.

As part of this agreement, a project focusing on the development of return gifts for the hometown tax program was launched with the involvement of students from Nihon University's Faculty of Law. The students engaged in dialogues with local businesses, exploring how to enhance the appeal of new return gifts. Their approach included redesigning the stories, enhancing product value, and fine-tuning designs—all with a fresh perspective from the youth.

This innovative endeavor aims not only to promote Shiojiri City's unique charm but also to foster a sustainable interest in the region, potentially increasing the number of engaged residents and aiding local industries.

These 'next-generation oyakis' are a result of student ideas grounded in nutritional science. The aim was to provide a balance of sports encouragement and nutritional support. The result is a satisfying, nutritious snack ideal for athletes.

Their design features delicate representations of Kikyō flowers and vines, presented in a friendly color palette, transforming traditional Shiojiri wine into a modern enjoyment experience.

Looking Ahead

This project not only showcases the innovative integration of student insights and local business expertise but also sets the stage for ongoing collaborations aimed at enhancing local resources and sustaining community development. Looking forward, Shiojiri City intends to continue fostering initiatives that elevate resource value, cultivate talent, and create lasting community relationships.
