Urenco USA Announces Major Expansion of Uranium Enrichment Capacity to Enhance U.S. Energy Security

Urenco USA's Landmark Expansion

Urenco USA has recently made headlines with its announcement of a substantial expansion project for the nation’s sole commercial uranium enrichment facility. This decision, which involves nearly a 50% increase in production capacity, is set to reinforce the stability of the U.S. nuclear fuel supply as the nation pivots towards enhancing its nuclear power capabilities.

Investment in Infrastructure

The substantial multi-billion-dollar investment will fund the construction of a new enrichment plant within Urenco USA's National Enrichment Facility located in Eunice, New Mexico. This facility is instrumental for producing low enriched uranium (LEU), which is crucial for the energy security of the United States. With construction slated to begin in 2029 and initial operations expected to start in 2032, Urenco is positioning itself to significantly boost uranium production in the coming years.

The new plant will add 2.1 million separative work units (SWU) of enrichment capacity and will utilize advanced gas-centrifuge technology, which Urenco has successfully implemented in its operations. During the expansion phase, as many as 24 cascades of centrifuges will be installed, propelling production to new heights by 2036.

Meeting National Energy Needs

Low enriched uranium serves as the foundational fuel source for the existing fleet of commercial light water reactors in the U.S., which contribute to almost 20% of the nation's electricity generation. Moreover, this expanded capacity will set the stage for advancements in high-assay low enriched uranium (HALEU) production, essential for the next generation of advanced reactor designs anticipated in the 2030s.

As part of this initiative, Urenco estimates that the expansion will support approximately 300-600 construction jobs at its peak and 70 permanent positions once operations ramp up. These job opportunities signify a boost for the local economy and highlight Urenco's commitment to being a reliable long-term supplier for U.S. utility companies.

Continued Investments

Urenco has a history of substantial investment in its operations; since 2006, it has injected over $5 billion into the facility to ensure a stable domestic supply of enriched uranium. Currently, the facility boasts an annual capacity of 4.3 million SWU, fulfilling about one-third of the U.S. demand for uranium enrichment. Furthermore, an ongoing expansion project is expected to add 700,000 SWU of capacity, scheduled for completion in 2027.

As part of its long-term strategy, Urenco USA plans to refurbish existing capacities at the Eunice site, ultimately allowing the facility’s total capacity to exceed 7 million SWU over the next decade. This bold move aligns with Urenco Global's comprehensive goal to install a combined 4.6 million SWU enrichment capacity across its facilities in the United States, Netherlands, and Germany.

Commitment to Energy Security

Boris Schucht, CEO of Urenco Global, emphasized the importance of this venture by stating, "For over fifteen years, Urenco USA has provided a dependable supply of enriched uranium to meet the needs of our U.S. utility customers. This expansion underscores our commitment to a resilient nuclear fuel supply chain and the enhancement of U.S. energy security through proactive investments."

Sarah Riedel, Head of Sales for Urenco, reiterated the company’s focus on reliable service, appreciating the trust that U.S. utilities have placed in them and how new long-term contracts have encouraged this expansion.

Besides the operational benefits, John Kirkpatrick, Managing Director of Urenco USA, noted how the investment in New Mexico not only results in job creation but also brings critical economic benefits to local communities and the broader state economy. He stated, "This is the most transformative expansion decision for Urenco in the past decade, and we are excited to continue fueling the growth of the U.S. nuclear power industry."
