MDA Space Secures Initial Contract from Canadian Space Agency for New RADARSAT Satellite
On December 4, 2025, MDA Space Ltd. (TSX: MDA), renowned for its mission support services in the expanding global space sector, announced that it has secured a pivotal contract from Public Services and Procurement Canada, acting on behalf of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). This contract, valued at $44.7 million, is aimed at procuring essential long lead components necessary for the development of a replenishment satellite for the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM).
The Canadian government further disclosed its plan to contract MDA Space for not just the procurement but also the complete lifecycle of the satellite, encompassing building, testing, and launching. The full mission contract is anticipated to be awarded in 2026, contingent upon the finalization and appropriate approvals.
This initiative is part of the Canadian government's larger $1.012 billion RADARSAT+ program, which is a 15-year investment announced by the CSA in October 2023, designed to meet both immediate and long-term satellite-based Earth observation requirements. This substantial funding will support not just a replenishment satellite but also pave the way for developing a next-generation national synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite system to succeed the existing RCM.
In addition to the RCM satellite project, MDA Space has secured a contract worth $747,000 to execute a concept study focused on crafting a robust radar satellite system. This system aims to address the growing data demands from government entities, businesses, and local communities across Canada for space-based Earth observation data. MDA Space is among three companies chosen for this pivotal study contract.
Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space, expressed gratitude for being selected by the CSA, stating, "We are honored to support the RCM replenishment satellite project. By leveraging MDA CHORUS™ satellite design's advancements for this replenishment satellite, we can provide CSA a cost-effective, timely solution that ensures continuous service to meet the evolving needs of Canadian users. We look forward to finalizing the full mission contract and continuing our long-standing collaboration to deliver vital space-based solutions for Canada."
The existing RCM satellites, designed and constructed by MDA Space, have proved to be invaluable for various Canadian government departments. They facilitate critical services including maritime surveillance, ecosystem monitoring, and emergency management. These capabilities highlight the importance of ongoing investment and development within Canada's satellite infrastructure.
The press release also contained forward-looking statements, illuminating MDA Space's optimistic approach towards the RCM mission's contract award and finalization processes. The company acknowledged there are numerous assumptions, risks, and uncertainties that could lead to actual results differing from these projections. However, MDA Space reassured stakeholders of its commitment to staying transparent regarding such developments.
