CVS Health Foundation Grants $1 Million to Community Initiatives in Hartford
The CVS Health Foundation has made a significant commitment to the Greater Hartford area by announcing a $1 million allocation in general operating grants to 20 organizations, aiming to fortify health initiatives within the community. This strategic move is part of the CVS Health Hometown Fund, created to uplift local nonprofits that focus on enhancing health outcomes through accessible services such as nutritious food, shelter, and education.
Sheryl Burke, President of the CVS Health Foundation, emphasized the purpose behind this initiative: "We created the Hometown Fund to support organizations dedicated to improving health outcomes in the communities around our corporate offices in Hartford and Woonsocket." With this funding, CVS Health aims to foster healthier communities where its employees live and work.
Among the grantees, Malta House of Care, Inc. stands out as a vital player in providing free behavioral health care to underserved populations in Hartford. Dianne Auger, CEO of Malta House of Care, expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the importance of addressing healthcare access challenges that so many Hartford residents face. "Too many Hartford residents must choose between healthcare and basic needs, and many uninsured adults delay medical care because they struggle to afford food, housing, and childcare," Auger stated. The grant will bolster Malta's mission to provide free primary care services, thereby improving health outcomes for uninsured adults in the Greater Hartford area.
In addition to Malta House of Care, the Hometown Fund will assist other notable organizations, including Camp Courant, Chrysalis Center, and the YWCA Hartford Region, to name a few. Each of these nonprofits plays a pivotal role in tackling pressing health issues and resource shortages within the community.
CVS Health has a longstanding history in Hartford, with Aetna being part of the community for 172 years. The recent grants underscore CVS Health's commitment to supporting community-focused initiatives in Connecticut. Earlier this year, the Foundation also invested $2 million to establish a Hartford Health Zone, which supports agencies such as the Hispanic Health Council’s Family Wellness Center, aiming to enhance healthcare access and social services in the area.
Furthermore, as part of its ongoing community engagement, CVS Health has hosted Project Health events, where free health screenings were offered to residents. Last year alone, the initiative reached over 450 participants through 23 events, leading to more than 1,500 health screenings.
CVS Health's commitment extends beyond immediate health services; it has invested significantly in affordable housing, recognizing the fundamental connection between stable living conditions and health. The organization is also involved with Hartford Promise and the Greater Futures Scholarship program, which aims to assist students in Hartford to graduate debt-free.
The CVS Health Foundation is dedicated to uniting communities to confront health challenges collaboratively. Their focus areas include mental well-being, chronic diseases, maternal health, and tackling food security issues. Their philanthropic efforts aim not just to provide immediate support but also to build a stronger infrastructure for a more balanced and healthy society, ensuring that the most vulnerable populations have access to necessary resources and support.
The investments made through the Hometown Fund reflect a broader mission to drive systemic change and foster health equity within the community. As the CVS Health Foundation continues to partner with various organizations, they hope to create an environment where improved health outcomes are within everyone's reach, helping in the journey toward healthier communities in Hartford.
