E-Grid's Triumph in Decarbonization Research
E-Grid inc., headquartered in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, and led by CEO Atsuhiro Komura, has recently received significant recognition for its innovative approach in tackling decarbonization challenges. Their project has been greenlit by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) as part of a national initiative aimed at promoting international verification of technologies that contribute to energy transition and decarbonization. Following rigorous assessments, E-Grid’s comprehensive research on electric bike driver behavior analysis is set to launch practical verification studies in Thailand starting April 2026.
Research Background
In alignment with the Thai government's ambitious goals of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero emissions by 2065, the demand for electric vehicles (EVs), especially electric bikes, is surging. However, the increasing requirement for electricity poses a potential threat. E-Grid aims to utilize its telematics technology and sensor-based application development to address not only energy efficiency but also promote eco-driving and safe driving practices. This multifaceted approach seeks to contribute significantly to solving global energy challenges.
Research Methodology and Objectives
The study will involve 20 commercial electric bikes operating from five EV charging stations managed by Thai company JowitGlobal across Bangkok. Utilizing GPS, accelerometers, and communication devices, the driving behavior data will be collected and analyzed using AI and data science methodologies. The findings will be integrated into an app to provide real-time feedback, illuminating the value of eco-driving diagnostics to encourage behavioral improvements. This project anticipates a reduction of over 20% in electricity consumption and aims to address accompanying societal issues like traffic accidents and bike breakdown rates.
Vision for Commercialization
Leveraging the outcome of this research, E-Grid plans to explore future research directions and approaches. The practical application of these findings will primarily target B2B sectors, enhancing service offerings for vehicle ownership businesses. They aim to develop solutions that not only improve efficiency for businesses but also align with broader societal goals.
Comments from CEO Atsuhiro Komura
Atsuhiro Komura expressed gratitude for the acceptance of their project by NEDO, emphasizing its critical importance in reducing CO2 emissions in the ASEAN region. He pointed out that this endeavor is not just vital for environmental purposes but is also essential for improving operational efficiency for bike taxi and delivery service providers through advanced AI, sensor technology, and data utilization. Komura conveyed the complexity and significance of balancing social issue resolution with business acceleration, pointing out the exciting prospect for the company and its employees for substantial growth through this initiative.
