Discovering Art Beyond Words at YUGEN Gallery

YUGEN Gallery FUKUOKA is set to host an intriguing conversation event titled "Seeing, Realizing, and Art Beyond" on September 12, 2026. This event is part of the ongoing exhibition "Afterwords, Beyond Meaning." The gallery will welcome Toshiichiro Morita, a board member of AFAF and director of Gallery Morita, along with contemporary artist Hisashi Yamamoto and YUGEN Gallery's owner Hiroaki Hayashida, who will facilitate the dialogue.

The primary focus of this discussion is to explore how language and text influence our perceptions and understandings. Through the lens of featured artworks, participants will delve into the concept of "realization" as a unique characteristic of art. The session will provoke thoughts on the significance of such expressions and how to recognize, support, and carry them forward into the future.

In preparation for the talk, three artists involved in the exhibition—Hisashi Yamamoto, sion, and Yoichiro Otani—will reveal their individual approaches to the interplay between words, meanings, and images. This exploration aims to visualize previously unnoticed perceptions and values, subsequently broadening the scope of art's impact by generating fresh perspectives and inquiries.

The dialogue will further address how art expressions and their values are recognized and evaluated today. Each speaker—Yamamoto as a creator, Morita as an AFAF board member, and Hayashida as a gallery owner—will share their insights regarding the current art market. They will discuss how to discover valuable expressions and how to effectively deliver them to society, as well as how those who support the arts can connect its value to the future.

Yamamoto's extensive experience in artistic production, Morita's leadership in establishing and managing the Fukuoka Art Fair, and Hayashida's dedication to delivering artists and their works to the public will provide a wealth of perspectives. The hope is that this exchange will lead to a broader discussion on everything from how we view the art to the environment surrounding it.
