Greenberg Traurig, LLP, a prominent global law firm, has recently taken a significant step to bolster its International Trade Practice and National Security Group by welcoming two accomplished shareholders: Shrutih R. Tewarie and Luciano (Lu) Racco. Both attorneys come from Foley Hoag LLP, where they served as co-chairs of that firm's International Trade and National Security Practice. Tewarie will be stationed in New York, while Racco will operate out of Washington, D.C.
The duo brings with them a wealth of experience in various aspects of outbound international trade. Their expertise spans regulatory counseling, internal and government investigations, litigation, sanctions, export controls, anti-corruption measures, and reviews of foreign investments, especially those scrutinized by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). Their practices also intersect with white-collar crime and national security issues.
Kara M. Bombach, co-chair of Greenberg Traurig's International Trade Practice, stated, "The demand for export controls and sanctions expertise continues to accelerate across industries and geographies. We are thrilled to welcome Shrutih and Lu as we continue to grow our team and deepen our bench in these areas. Their complementary experience bolsters our ability to serve clients in increasingly complex and high-stakes matters, working collaboratively to provide innovative and practical solutions." This addition comes at a time when governments around the globe are enacting stringent legal and regulatory measures to tackle evolving technological changes and national security concerns. As a result, there has been an increase in enforcement actions from various regions including the United States, UK, EU, and beyond.
The practices of Tewarie and Racco will focus on cross-border trade, due diligence, investigations, and litigation, serving an extensive client range from Fortune 500 companies to emerging businesses across diverse sectors, such as life sciences, aerospace and defense, technology, financial services, oil and gas, as well as retail.
E. Patrick Gilman, the chair of Greenberg Traurig's National Security Group, commented, "Shrutih and Lu represent exactly the type of sophisticated practitioners our National Security Group offers our global client base. Their extensive experience and deep understanding of export controls and other global national security frameworks make them invaluable additions to our team serving clients across defense, aerospace, technology, and other critical sectors."
Both Tewarie and Racco have a history of collaboration with U.S. federal agencies, including the Department of Treasury, Commerce, State, Justice, and Customs and Border Protection. Their work includes handling issues related to sanctions, export controls, customs fraud, money laundering, and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). They specialize in conducting high-stakes internal investigations, defending against government enforcement actions, and assisting clients in navigating the process of obtaining licenses and guidance.
In a joint statement, Tewarie and Racco expressed their excitement about joining Greenberg Traurig, remarking, "Greenberg Traurig's ever-growing geographic footprint and expansive platform provide tremendous advantages for our clients. We are thrilled to join a team with such strong existing capabilities in international trade and to further build depth for clients facing increasingly complex regulatory challenges. The firm's strengths in customs and import, along with adjacent areas like government law and policy, government contracts, white-collar crime, and global mergers and acquisitions (M&A), complemented by its presence in crucial trading and financial centers worldwide, will enable us to collaborate on significant matters, ultimately delivering even greater value for our clients."
Regarding their academic backgrounds, Tewarie holds a J.D. from Cornell Law School and a B.A. from Tufts University. Racco earned his J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School and his B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross.
