Johnson Controls Expands European Operations in Denmark

Johnson Controls, a global leader in thermal management, critical building systems, energy efficiency, and decarbonization, has recently announced the expansion of its operations in Europe. This expansion includes the inauguration of a new facility dedicated to heat pump production and testing located in Holme, Denmark. The facility is designed to meet the growing demand for high-capacity heat pumps across Europe, a crucial step towards supporting the continent’s energy transition and sustainability goals.

Enhanced Production Capacity

The newly opened facility will significantly boost Johnson Controls’ production and testing capabilities, doubling the existing capacity. The site will include an additional 2,300 square meters of production space and 1,800 square meters dedicated to a customer experience and testing center, adhering to the latest standards established by the European Heat Pump Association (EN 14511).

This expansion allows for the rigorous testing of industrial heat pumps under various extreme conditions, enabling customers to gain insights into their performance and reliability before deployment. Moreover, the Holme facility will operate entirely on green electricity, reinforcing Johnson Controls' commitment to sustainability while reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

The expansion is expected to create over 100 new jobs, further solidifying Johnson Controls’ position as a key player in the European industrial landscape. This investment aims not only to enhance local employment but also to accelerate the electrification of district heating systems and other significant industrial sectors across Europe.

Richard Lek, President of EMEA at Johnson Controls, highlighted the importance of this expansion by stating, “With our decades of manufacturing expertise in Europe and our market-leading position in commercial large heat pumps, this expansion in Holme underscores our long-term commitment to developing vital technologies for Europe.” He emphasized that the facility will empower communities and energy-intensive industries to electrify their heat supply, reducing costs and emissions through locally designed and tested solutions.

Advancing Heating Technology

Heat supply accounts for over 60% of energy consumption in European industries, leading to increased costs and resource allocation that could otherwise boost innovation and competitive edge. The advancements in heat pump technology present solutions to this challenge, transforming natural heat and waste heat from various sources into affordable, low-carbon warmth.

In 2025, Johnson Controls’ heat pump solutions helped clients reduce their heating costs by as much as 32% and cut emissions by up to 55%, highlighting the urgent need to deploy proven technologies at scale.

The Holme facility will manufacture tailored heat pumps and chillers under the Sabroe brand, along with reconditioned components and aftermarket parts. Designed to comply with the upcoming EU regulations set to come into effect in 2027 and 2030, these technologies utilize refrigerants with zero or low Global Warming Potential (GWP).

Benthe Klokkerholm, Vice President of Manufacturing Operations HVAC/R, EMEA, noted that “this site has been the foundation for innovation in heating and cooling since our founder Thomas Sabroe established the company in 1897.” She added that the expansion would position Aarhus as a technological hub for district heating solutions, providing value to clients throughout Europe and the broader region.

Johnson Controls has successfully delivered large heat pumps to hundreds of customers across Europe and beyond, including notable clients like Vattenfall in Berlin, Germany, and New Aalborg University Hospital in Denmark. The Holme site complements Johnson Controls’ extensive manufacturing presence in Europe, further supporting customer needs in collaboration with facilities in Nantes, Milan, Cork, and Budapest.
