China and Myanmar Strengthen Diplomatic Ties

From June 15 to June 19, 2026, Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing made a landmark visit to China, signifying a new chapter in the bilateral relationship between the two neighboring countries. This visit was not only his first official state visit to China, but it also opened avenues for deepening pragmatic cooperation across various fields, including infrastructure and trade.

During his stay, President Hlaing toured the China Railway Construction Corporation Limited in Beijing. He also experienced the advancements of China’s high-speed rail system while traveling from Beijing to Shanghai on the Fuxing. These experiences ignited President Hlaing's enthusiasm to expand Myanmar's practical collaboration with China in infrastructure development, showcasing China's success model in this area.

As part of this fruitful visit, several cooperation agreements were signed, cementing the long-standing friendship known in Myanmar as “pauk-phaw.” These agreements emphasize mutual growth and development, coordinated security efforts, and interpersonal relations between the two nations.

In a meeting with President Hlaing, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed China's readiness to share developmental experiences with Myanmar, forging a robust community centered on mutual trust and beneficial growth. He emphasized the importance of economic collaboration that would foster security coordination and enhance human contact between both countries.

China has been the largest trading partner for Myanmar for several years, serving as its primary import source and leading foreign investor. The trade volume between the two nations reached an impressive $19.4 billion in 2025, reflecting a 19.1% year-on-year growth. This significant rise in commerce showcases the complementary capabilities of both countries, with China exporting electromechanical equipment and vehicles to Myanmar, while importing high-quality agricultural products and mineral resources in return.

The China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, a key component of the Belt and Road Initiative, is currently undergoing rapid development. Flagship projects such as the New Yangon City, the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone, and the China-Myanmar Railway are taking shape, creating a solid framework for this vital economic corridor. These infrastructure endeavors not only bolster Myanmar's industrial modernization but also improve the living conditions of local populations, driving cross-border economic integration.

During the discussions on Tuesday, President Xi reiterated that the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor stands as a flagship project under the Belt and Road Initiative. He urged both sides to persist in building key projects while ensuring their safety, thereby promoting Myanmar’s economic growth and enhancing the living standards of its citizens.

Furthermore, President Xi highlighted China's commitment to executing additional small-scale aid programs while sharing success stories of mutually beneficial cooperation. Both governments jointly released a comprehensive declaration emphasizing the acceleration of constructing a shared future community aimed at benefitting both peoples.

In recognition of the comprehensive nature of their relationship, multiple partnership agreements were signed in areas such as transportation, science and technology, intellectual property rights, human resource development, public health, and media cooperation. The discussions also focused on bilateral and multilateral cooperation among security forces to combat transnational crime, asserting the importance of collaboration in establishing an international alliance against telecommunications and cyber fraud.

In recent months, coordinated operations between China and Myanmar have curtailed the activities of organized crime groups operating in northern Myanmar, contributing to stability in border areas and protecting the safety and property of citizens in both countries. President Xi urged continued efforts in combating criminal activities, including online gambling, telecommunications fraud, and drug trafficking, assuring the protection of interests and security for both nations.

President Hlaing confirmed Myanmar's readiness to work closely with China to tackle internet gambling and telecommunications fraud while ensuring safety and stability in border regions. As reported by Qu Jianwen, the chairman of the Yunnan Association for Southeast Asian Studies, President Hlaing's diplomatic visit exemplifies the healthy and growing dynamics of bilateral cooperation.
