U.S. Bank Stadium Receives 2025 Barrier-Free America Award
In a remarkable achievement for accessibility in sports venues, U.S. Bank Stadium has been awarded the 2025 Barrier-Free America Award by the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA). This prestigious award, presented on April 24, 2025, celebrates the stadium's outstanding efforts to create an inclusive environment for all attendees, particularly those with disabilities.
As one of the premier nonprofit organizations dedicated to the welfare of veterans with spinal cord injuries and diseases, PVA recognized U.S. Bank Stadium as the first NFL venue to receive this accolade. The award was conferred upon the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, ASM Global, and the Minnesota Vikings, each of whom plays a crucial role in the stadium's operation and management.
According to Robert Thomas, a U.S. Army veteran and the National President of PVA, “U.S. Bank Stadium sets the standard for how modern entertainment venues can ensure all fans and attendees feel valued and accommodated.” The stadium is designed to support individuals using assistive mobility devices, enabling them to enjoy events just like every other fan. Thomas emphasized his appreciation for the collaboration among various stakeholders to prioritize universal access during the stadium's construction.
Located in the vibrant downtown area of Minneapolis, U.S. Bank Stadium boasts numerous accessibility features. These include spacious concourses, dedicated seating for individuals with mobility challenges, and a wide range of accessible concessions. Furthermore, the stadium has installed an adult changing table in response to requests from community members, ensuring greater comfort for all guests.
Michael Vekich, Chair of the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, expressed pride at receiving the Barrier-Free America Award, stating, “This special recognition underscores our commitment to serving our entire community.” The authority aims to enhance accessibility through continual engagement with the community and purposeful improvements in the stadium.
John Drum, General Manager for ASM Global at U.S. Bank Stadium, added, “Ensuring that U.S. Bank Stadium is accessible to everyone has been a key pillar in our operation of this building.” Drum acknowledged the careful planning and implementation that went into the stadium’s design to facilitate inclusive experiences for guests.
PVA, which works towards creating a more accessible world for veterans and individuals with disabilities, provides guidance on accessible design and building standards nationwide. They offer technical assistance for a range of projects, whether for small home remodels or extensive public structures.
Moreover, J.P. Paul, Vice President of Stadium Operations for the Minnesota Vikings, noted, “We have built a culture of service excellence through our SKOL Service program.” This commitment to exceptional service echoes throughout the operations and events at U.S. Bank Stadium, fostering a joyful atmosphere for all visitors.
The recognition received by U.S. Bank Stadium serves not only as a testament to its dedication to accessibility but also as an inspiration for other venues to follow suit. Paralyzed Veterans of America’s Barrier-Free America Award highlights the critical importance of inclusivity in public spaces, ensuring that everyone can participate in communal experiences without barriers.
