AVAIO Digital Announces Major Development Milestone for Data Center in Algete, Spain
AVAIO Digital Achieves Milestone in AI-Ready Data Center Development in Algete, Spain
On August 14, 2025, AVAIO Digital proudly announced the establishment of its inaugural data center in Spain, strategically located in Algete, within the Community of Madrid. This project, which represents a significant investment of 650 million euros, is set in the heart of one of Europe's fastest-growing data center markets.
The Algete Data Hub, featuring the AVAIO Digital Scorpio, is an AI-ready, hyper-scale data center designed for a range of applications from cloud computing to artificial intelligence. The facility will operate on a substantial power supply of 64 MW, of which 56.3 MW has been secured from Iberdrola, Spain's leading energy provider. An initial agreement for 8 MW has also been established, with connections set to be delivered by 2028.
This state-of-the-art data center is not just about providing storage and computational power; it plays a vital role in boosting regional development and employment. AVAIO Digital projects that over 500 jobs will be created during the construction phase, with around 50 permanent positions available upon the facility's operational launch. Mark McComiskey, CEO of AVAIO Digital, emphasized Madrid's status as a European technology hub, particularly for cloud computing and AI. He expressed excitement about collaborating with the Algete municipality to significantly enhance digital and energy infrastructure in the region.
The data center's strategic location provides low-latency connectivity to key data center clusters in Alcobendas and Alcalá, linking seamlessly with Spain's national fiber network. This will enhance accessibility to major data markets in Spain, Europe, and even international markets through various submarine cable landing points.
Moreover, AVAIO Digital is committed to sustainability in its design. The Algete Data Hub will feature intelligent and environmentally friendly design elements, including rainwater harvesting systems, rooftop solar panels, and an efficient air cooling system that utilizes water sparingly. This initiative seeks to minimize ecological impact while providing a powerful infrastructure for modern digital demands.
Pedro Blanco, the project director for Spain at AVAIO Digital, reflected on the broader implications of this project, noting its contribution to establishing Algete as a vital data center location while transitioning a former industrial area into a green space. He stated, “We believe this project will reposition Algete as a prominent player in the data center sector, aligning with sustainable practices.”
AVAIO Digital's growth strategy extends beyond Spain, with a robust portfolio of large-scale projects across the US and Western Europe, including over 2 GW of energy secured from utility companies in locations like Northern California, Virginia, Arkansas, and Mississippi. The company's focus on behind-the-meter energy generation and innovative, sustainable practices positions it as a leader in the next generation of data center infrastructure.
