Platinum Equity Finalizes $6.6 Billion Sale of Urbaser to Blackstone and EQT

In a significant move within the environmental services sector, Platinum Equity has finalized the sale of Urbaser, a global leader in integrated environmental infrastructure, to investment giants Blackstone and EQT for a total consideration of approximately $6.6 billion. Headquartered in Madrid, the company has made its mark in the industry by offering sustainable solutions for waste management and treatment, catering to more than 60 million people worldwide.

Urbaser specializes in various spheres of environmental services, including urban sanitation, municipal waste treatment, and industrial waste management. The acquisition by Platinum Equity was first initiated back in October 2021 from China Tianying Inc. for approximately $4.2 billion. Since then, Urbaser has undergone a transformational business strategy, repositioning itself to focus on sectors with strong growth and long-term revenue opportunities.

The success of this transformation can be attributed to a multi-faceted strategy employed by Platinum Equity, which included heavy investment over the past five years, amounting to €1.6 billion. This investment facilitated the execution of 20 acquisitions and the divestment of 13 non-core divisions, ultimately leading to a more streamlined and resilient organization. Notably, the EBITDA increased by an impressive 70% since 2020. Furthermore, the company saw its revenues grow by over 60%, highlighting the successful execution of their ambitious plans.

Louis Samson, Co-President of Platinum Equity, lauded the transformation of Urbaser, stating, "Urbaser is fundamentally different today than when we first acquired it. We've assembled a proficient management team that has driven strategic investments and sharpened our operational focus." This overhaul has greatly enhanced Urbaser's capability to provide state-of-the-art waste management solutions, thereby fortifying its competitive position in the market.

Under the leadership of Urbaser's current CEO, Fernando Abril-Martorell, the company has not only improved its operational efficiency but has also bolstered its commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, defining it as a key strategic pillar in their growth strategy.

Despite the success of this sale, Platinum Equity retained the waste management business of Urbaser operating in Argentina, which has been servicing the region for over three decades, generating substantial EBITDA of approximately $90 million last year.

This acquisition highlights the substantial opportunities available in the environmental infrastructure market and sets the stage for Blackstone and EQT to capitalize on Urbaser’s growth potential moving forward. Both companies are expected to leverage their expertise to further enhance Urbaser’s capabilities, sustainability practices, and overall market footprint.

Furthermore, Platinum Equity has recently engaged in additional activities across Europe, signaling ongoing investments and interest in businesses that align with their operational expertise, which includes a wide span across sectors like manufacturing, distribution, and technology.

In conclusion, the sale of Urbaser represents not only a pivotal milestone for Platinum Equity but also a significant advancement in the global environmental services industry, driven by innovative business strategies and a visionary leadership team committed to fostering sustainable practices.
