Mitsubishi Electric Upgrades to Gold Membership with Linux Foundation at Open Source Summit Japan

Mitsubishi Electric Joins Linux Foundation as Gold Member

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation recently upgraded its membership status to that of Gold Member within the Linux Foundation during the Open Source Summit Japan. This promotion from Silver to Gold signifies a proactive commitment to both open source and InnerSource initiatives, marking a pivotal step in Mitsubishi's role as an integral player in the global software development landscape.

The Linux Foundation is renowned for fostering innovation across the open-source ecosystem, and Mitsubishi Electric's transition illustrates their dedication to collaborative software development. Jim Zemlin, the Executive Director of the Linux Foundation, expressed enthusiasm regarding this upgrade, highlighting Mitsubishi's extensive contribution across industries—from automotive to manufacturing. He emphasized the crucial role of partnerships when developing software solutions that can pioneer advancements in technology.

As a leading manufacturer, Mitsubishi Electric has been a steadfast member of the Linux Foundation since 2014. Throughout this decade-long alliance, the company has demonstrated a passion for enhancing the open-source community. One such example includes their launch of the Serendie™ Design System—a user interface and user experience design platform aimed at fostering collaborative design within and beyond the company. Released in November 2024, Serendie™ serves as a testament to Mitsubishi's ongoing innovation ethos.

Moreover, Mitsubishi Electric has established an Open Source InnerSource Program Office (OSPO/ISPO) aimed at advocating best practices regarding open-source development internally. This move not only highlights their commitment to open-source methodologies but also reinforces their efforts to enhance developer collaboration and bridge gaps across various corporate silos.

Shingo Oidate, General Manager of OSPO/ISPO at Mitsubishi Electric, spoke about Serendie™ and their broader digital strategy. He noted that through digital platforms and open-source collaboration, Mitsubishi Electric is evolving into a company deeply embedded in innovation, creating significant value through joint efforts with partners and clients alike. The company’s legacy as a Silver member emphasized its belief in open-source, and now, this ascension to Gold membership reflects their ambition to serve as an active contributor in a globally impactful format.

Mitsubishi Electric's contributions have also been influential within major Linux Foundation projects, notably PyTorch. Celebrated for his work on advancing AI technologies at the edge, Masahiro Hiramori was recognized as a PyTorch Ambassador in 2025 and received honors as a Contributor Awards Nominee in two successive years (2024 and 2025). His recognition showcases Mitsubishi's vital role in open source and further solidifies their influence on innovation.

During the upcoming Open Source Summit Japan from December 8-10, 2025, Mitsubishi Electric plans to showcase their contributions and insights in open source practices. Their upcoming session will delve into establishing a dual-focused OSPO— a topic particularly relevant to traditional Japanese conglomerates. Attendees and innovators eager to learn about the applications of open-source methodologies are encouraged to register and participate in this groundbreaking event.
