Vitamin Angels and Makueni County: A Leap Towards Improving Maternal Health

Recently, a significant partnership was forged between Vitamin Angels, a global health nonprofit, and the Makueni County Government. This initiative aims to distribute multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS), essential for prenatal care, across 13 health facilities in Makueni County, with the goal of reaching approximately 7,200 pregnant women by the end of 2026.

The distribution of these prenatal vitamins marks a pivotal moment for maternal health in Kenya, spearheaded by the Transforming Lives Through Nutrition Consortium, funded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The MMS rollout is designed to expand further in the coming years, potentially reaching all 242 health facilities in Makueni County by 2028. This ambitious plan positions Makueni County as a leader in enhancing access to evidence-based maternal nutrition interventions throughout Kenya.

The launch event took place at the Makueni County Mother and Child Hospital, bringing together county officials, healthcare workers, and community partners. Ana Céspedes, CEO of Vitamin Angels, emphasized the profound impact that MMS can have on maternal health. Studies suggest that these supplements can significantly reduce risks associated with low birth weight, preterm births, and infant mortality when compared to traditional iron and folic acid supplements alone. She commended Makueni County for its swift implementation of this initiative, stating that it reflected effective leadership and a dedication to evidence-based health solutions.

Makueni County, characteristic of its arid climate, has faced severe challenges in maternal and child nutrition.
