Huawei Advocates for Enhanced Collaboration to Bridge the Digital Divide in Technology

At the recent Huawei ICT Sustainability Roundtable held during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, the urgency of combating a potential new digital divide was highlighted by the tech giant. As advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) sweep across various sectors, Huawei calls upon policymakers and industry stakeholders in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) space to deepen open innovation and collaborative efforts. This initiative is essential to ensure that everyone can benefit from the rapid technological changes occurring today.

In his keynote speech, Huawei's Rotating Chairman, Ken Hu, posited that while digital technologies foster sustainable changes, the possibility of a digital chasm becoming entrenched by these innovations looms large. He pointed to Huawei’s own initiatives like the TECH4ALL program, which has been instrumental in promoting digital education and inclusion. Hu stressed, “As AI evolves and makes the world smarter, there’s a risk of creating a new digital divide. Addressing this issue requires collective efforts among stakeholders.” He urged governments to formulate inclusive policies and for tech enterprises to champion open innovation.

The roundtable served as a platform for collaboration, showcasing numerous projects aimed at addressing digital inclusion in underserved communities. Eng. John Tanui, a representative of the Kenyan government, shared how collaborations with Huawei are aligned with Kenya Vision 2030 to facilitate economic growth through enhanced digital infrastructure and service digitization. Significantly, the Huawei TECH4ALL DigiTruck initiative, a mobile classroom initiative, has educated approximately 6,000 Kenyan youths in various tech skills since its inception in 2019.

Tanui commented, “Our partnership with Huawei under the TECH4ALL initiative reflects our belief that nobody should be left behind. With our mobile DigiTrucks, we provide essential training on smartphone usage, online safety, and the effective utilization of internet resources for education.” A report evaluating the DigiTruck program revealed that about 93% of trainees reported improved work capabilities, alongside enhanced employment rates and increased online business activity among participants.

Moreover, the Universal Service Fund Pakistan (USF) highlighted similar efforts in Pakistan, where the TECH4ALL Smart Village Pakistan project, in collaboration with Huawei and ITU-D, is revitalizing rural communities through enhanced connectivity, education, and healthcare services paired with digital skills training.

In a broader context, UNESCO and Spain's University of Alicante discussed global initiatives aimed at cultivating the next generation of ICT professionals, underscoring the significance of partnerships with entities like the Huawei ICT Academy.

Furthermore, conservation efforts benefited from technological interventions via the IUCN-Huawei TECH4ALL Tech4Nature global partnership. This initiative has launched 13 flagship projects across 11 nations, deploying innovative technological solutions to enhance nature conservation.

Common threads in the showcased projects at the roundtable included a focus on technological ingenuity and the necessity for cross-sector alliances. Emphasizing these approaches, Hu iterated that such collaborations are pivotal in harnessing ICT’s potential to ensure a wide-reaching, inclusive digital landscape.
