Okayama University Joins Earth Charter Youth Summit 2026

Okayama University, located in Okayama City, participated in the Earth Charter Youth Summit held from July 11 to 13, 2026, at Soka University of America in California. The university's Vice President, Atsufumi Nakai, along with graduate student Sakurako Iwazu, engaged in significant dialogues surrounding climate justice and youth leadership.

The summit was themed "Redesigning Tomorrow's World: Uniting Global Youth for Climate Justice and Collective Healing - An Intercultural Call for the Earth Community." Over 100 youth leaders and activists from 29 countries gathered to brainstorm sustainable solutions and strengthen their collective movement for the Earth Charter. Participants built networks through various workshops and discussions, transcending national and cultural boundaries.

In the opening session, Vice President Nakai delivered a compelling lecture titled "The Earth Charter as an Ethical Framework for Planetary Well-Being and Youth Agency." He emphasized the importance of the Earth Charter in guiding youth towards ethical practices and discussed the concept of "Planetizenship," which encourages active participation in global citizenship for a sustainable future.

Moreover, Nakai also spoke on "Planetary Well-being, the Post-2030 Agenda, and Transformative Future" during a breakout session. His insights addressed the pressing need for educational frameworks that empower youth to take charge of the sustainability agenda post-2030.

Graduate student Iwazu actively participated in discussions, engaging with peers from different nations on the vital roles that youth play in achieving climate justice grounded in the Earth Charter's principles. Iwazu expressed her newfound understanding of the importance of youth participation in addressing these global challenges.

On July 10, the day before the summit, Nakai attended a Council meeting of Earth Charter International, sharing updates regarding the Earth Charter Japan Committee's upcoming research report titled "Earth Charter and the Transformation of Civilization," as well as educational programs connected to UNESCO Chair's initiatives at Okayama University.

Looking ahead, Okayama University remains committed to advancing integrated efforts surrounding the Earth Charter and UNESCO's endorsement of "ESD for 2030," ensuring that next-generation involvement remains a primary focus. As a cornerstone research university recognized for its regional significance, Okayama University is poised to deepen its community engagement and research initiatives aimed at sustainability as it moves forward.
