Zeon Corporation Breaks Ground on New Cycloolefin Polymer Plant in Japan

Japan's Zeon Corporation has officially begun construction on a new facility dedicated to the production of cycloolefin polymers (COP) in Yamaguchi Prefecture. This significant event took place in the Yuka area of Shunan City, where the groundbreaking ceremony was held on February 18, 2026. The company plans to commence full-scale construction in March 2026, with an expected completion date in the first half of fiscal year 2028.

The latest plant will enable Zeon to increase its annual production capacity of COP by approximately 30%, enhancing its ability to meet the rising demands spanning various industries. COP is not only being adopted for optical applications but also for medical and semiconductor uses, highlighting the versatility and expanding market potential for these materials.

To symbolize the importance of this project, the groundbreaking ceremony was attended by dignitaries from Yamaguchi Prefecture and Shunan City, along with local community members, construction representatives, and key executives from Zeon, including President Tetsuya Toyoshima and plant manager Akira Honma. A total of 62 attendees gathered to pray for the safety and success of the construction effort.

In a press conference held on the same day, President Toyoshima expressed his long-standing dream of addressing the vigorous demand for COP, emphasizing the significance of kicking off construction in such a favorable location. He stated, "This new plant represents a remarkable opportunity for further business expansion in the Shunan area. We aim to continue meeting societal expectations through our unique materials."

About COP and Zeon's Innovations

Cycloolefin polymers, sold under the brand names ZEONEX® and ZEONOR®, are high-transparency plastics developed by Zeon. They possess outstanding optical properties, low moisture absorption, and minimal impurities, making them ideal for various applications including optical films and lenses, as well as medical devices such as syringes and cell culture plates. Furthermore, the adaptation of COP for semiconductor transport containers is accelerating, reflecting the growing demand for these materials across different sectors.
