American Skin Association's New Leadership
On April 7, 2025, the American Skin Association (ASA) convened its Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors, marking a significant milestone with the announcement of Dr. James G. Krueger, MD, PhD, as the new president. Dr. Krueger, a distinguished dermatologist with a wealth of experience, is stepping into this pivotal role at a time when the need for innovative leadership in dermatology is crucial.
Dr. Krueger has been a leading figure in dermatological research for over four decades, holding esteemed positions at The Rockefeller University, including Head of the Laboratory for Investigative Dermatology and Co-Director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science. His contributions have been transformative, particularly in the field of psoriasis, where his team pioneered targeted immune therapies, proving that removing pathogenic T cells can mitigate the severe manifestations of the disease.
In his welcoming remarks, Howard P. Milstein, the ASA's Chairman, expressed enthusiasm for having Dr. Krueger aboard, noting, "His 40 years of pioneering research and extensive experience will bring immense value to our organization and to the broader dermatology community." With over 400 scientific publications, Dr. Krueger has established himself as an authority in skin health, earning recognition from various prestigious societies including the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
In conjunction with Dr. Krueger's appointment, ASA also announced the addition of Dr. Alexa B. Kimball, MD, MPH, to its Board of Directors. Dr. Kimball serves as the CEO and President at Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and is a professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School. Her research primarily focuses on psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa, and she has an impressive portfolio of 385 publications and over 150 clinical trials.
"I wholeheartedly welcome Dr. Kimball to the ASA Board of Directors. Her extensive experience and commitment to advancing dermatological care make her a valuable addition to our team," stated Milstein. Additionally, Dr. Kimball's role on the Advisory Council to the Director of the National Institutes of Health showcases her high standing in the medical community and her dedication to public health and policy.
Dr. Kimball has received numerous honors throughout her career, including the American Skin Association Research Award for Health Policy and Medical Education, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Psoriasis Foundation. Her contributions are expected to invigorate the ASA's mission of improving skin health for all, particularly vulnerable populations.
The American Skin Association, established nearly four decades ago, is a unique platform that encompasses patients, families, advocates, physicians, and scientists dedicated to fighting skin diseases, including melanoma and other forms of skin cancer. The organization caters to the needs of over 100 million Americans suffering from skin disorders, with a focus on research advancement and public awareness.
In light of this leadership change, it's essential to acknowledge the contributions of the outgoing president, Dr. David A. Norris, who has served ASA for 28 years, including eight years as president. His dedication has paved the way for ASA's successful initiatives, making a lasting impact on the field of dermatology.
As ASA embraces this leadership transition, the organization continues to strive toward its mission to advance research and champion skin health, especially among children. The new leadership of Dr. Krueger and Dr. Kimball promises a renewed focus on innovative solutions and community engagement in tackling pressing skin health issues.
