The findings reveal that among the patients who underwent hair restoration surgery for the first time in 2024, a striking 95% were aged between 20 and 35 years. This demographic shift highlights a growing awareness of hair loss solutions among younger individuals, moving away from the traditional perception that such treatments are only for older adults.

Moreover, the number of women seeking surgical interventions for hair restoration has increased by 16.5% from 2021 to 2024, demonstrating a significant change in societal attitudes towards women addressing hair loss. This trend suggests that women are increasingly prioritizing their appearance and self-esteem, driving demand for effective hair restoration solutions.

The ISHRS highlights that on average, each member performed about 15 hair restoration procedures per month in 2024, which reflects their commitment to providing hands-on surgical care. On the female side, eyebrow transplants accounted for 12% of preferences, while facial hair restoration for men represented 5% of procedures.

An interesting aspect of the ISHRS survey is the feedback from patients regarding their motivations for undergoing these procedures. Nearly half of the respondents expressed a willingness to discuss their hair transplant experiences with others. A significant 44% of patients planned to share their hair restoration journey with their networks, driven primarily by a desire to feel and appear more attractive. In fact, 90% cited improving their attractiveness as the main reason for seeking hair transplantation, while 63% expressed the wish to look younger to remain competitive in the job market.

Concerns About the Black Market

Dr. Mejia voiced concerns regarding the rising complications associated with hair transplants performed in black-market clinics, which are typically staffed by unlicensed personnel. Alarmingly, 59% of ISHRS members reported the presence of such illicit clinics in their cities, a rise from 51% in 2021. Moreover, the proportion of cases that required corrective procedures due to earlier botched transplants increased from 6% to 10% during the same period.
