Discover Kenya: A Unique Study Tour with SHIFT80 in Summer 2026

Unveiling the SHIFT80 Study Tour 2026

SHIFT80, a pioneering organization engaged in humanitarian efforts in Kenya, is thrilled to announce the commencement of participant recruitment for its highly anticipated 2026 Summer Study Tour. From April 13, 2026, those interested will have the chance to embark on an eye-opening journey across Nairobi, focusing on the Kibera slum and its surrounding areas. This tour is not just about observation — it’s about fostering meaningful connections that transcend the traditional roles of 'giver' and 'receiver'.

Concept of the Tour: Why Kenya Now?

In an era where social media and news outlets frequently spotlight the lives of children in Africa, many people resonate with the urge to offer help, yet harbor doubts. Does my support truly reach those in need? What is life like for the local inhabitants? This empowering journey answers these questions by immersing participants in real-life experiences, enabling them to truly perceive the warmth, scents, and vibrance of Kenyan life.

On this tour, participants will visit SHIFT80’s direct engagement sites, meeting resilient individuals who embody strength and hope rather than despair. We aim to balance the 'real' aspects of international cooperation with unforgettable excursions to Nairobi National Park for a thrilling safari, the pristine Diani Beach overlooking the Indian Ocean, and the breathtaking Tsavo National Park.

Key Features of the Tour

1. Visit SHIFT80's Groundwork: The core of this tour is a deep dive into the areas where SHIFT80 actively operates. Participants will have the unique opportunity to visit the Magoso School, which caters to orphans and underprivileged children in Kibera, and the associated Magozo Community Center, engaging directly with the youth there. The extended tour also includes a visit to a children's rescue center in Miritini, near Mombasa for an enhanced understanding of local welfare initiatives.

2. Guidance from Chiaki Hayakawa: Chiaki Hayakawa, a seasoned peace activist who has lived in Kenya for 38 years, and founder of the Magozo School will accompany the group. Chiaki will provide invaluable insights about Kibera's history and the complexities of life within the slum, guiding participants into perspectives seldom encountered in superficial visits. Language barriers will be smoothed over with support and translation provided by Chiaki and SHIFT80 members.

3. Engagement with Migi Sakata: Co-CEO of Kotatsu and SHIFT80’s representative, Migi Sakata is another guiding figure throughout the journey. Participants can expect stimulating dialog about international cooperation, careers, and societal contributions during meal times and while traveling. This tour is ideal for anyone curious about how they can engage with international initiatives.

4. Enjoy Nature and Adventure: The itinerary also includes Nairobi National Park safari (common across all tours), visits to Diani Beach (for the 8-day and 10-day programs), and a sunrise safari at Tsavo East (exclusive to the 10-day program). Participants will experience Kenya's vibrant wildlife and diverse attractions, all while enjoying accommodations at quality hotels.

Testimonials from Past Participants

Participants from previous tours have often remarked on the life-changing experiences they encountered. One participant shared, "Hearing the stories from those living in Kibera left an incredible impression on me. Their hope for the future made me reflect on my own outlook and the reasons for any feelings of sadness I may carry. It was a powerful stimulus I never anticipated."

Another participant said, "Despite the daily challenges faced by those in Kibera, they lived with optimism and resilience. The care and attention from our knowledgeable guides who have lived in Kenya for years provided me with a deep sense of security during trips."
