In a significant move to bolster its research capabilities, the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has announced plans to enhance its collaboration with the prestigious École Polytechnique in France. This initiative is set to begin in 2025 and aims to strengthen the growing artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem in both France and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The partnership will enable teams from both institutions to engage in joint research efforts, focusing on key AI areas such as large language models, reasoning frameworks, and practical applications of AI in various sectors including healthcare, biology, and AI safety.
Professor Eric Xing, the president of MBZUAI, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, "Our partnerships and presence in France are vital for the ongoing growth and innovation of our research capabilities at MBZUAI. We are excited to expand our relationship with École Polytechnique to support these efforts." This initiative builds on an earlier Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two institutions in February 2025, which aimed to foster joint teaching, research, and innovation initiatives.
The MoU was officially signed at the AI summit in France, where Professor Xing delivered a keynote address discussing the role of AI in science and society. Following this, both institutions further solidified their commitment by establishing an Exchange Program Agreement in April, which will facilitate the exchange of students and researchers between MBZUAI and École Polytechnique.
Laura Chaubard, the General Director of École Polytechnique, expressed her enthusiasm for the expanded research partnership, noting, "I am thrilled to continue our strategic research partnership with MBZUAI. There exists a multitude of scientific synergies in the fields of AI applied to health, security, and energy transition, along with large-scale language models and foundational reasoning models. I am confident that these synergies will lead to fruitful collaborations in the future."
This strategic partnership represents a pivotal step forward in joint research efforts, nurturing the next generation of researchers and innovators in the field of AI. Additionally, MBZUAI's growing research links with France are evidenced by the establishment of the MBZUAI France laboratory in Paris. Among its achievements, researchers at this satellite lab have developed a family of open-source large language models (LLMs) known as Atlas-Chat, focusing specifically on Moroccan Arabic dialect (darija). The team has released two significant language models: Atlas-Chat-2B, designed for efficient text generation in contemporary darija, and Atlas-Chat-9B, which provides richer and more nuanced contextual results for advanced tasks.
The Paris laboratory is also set to play a central role in the upcoming Institute of Foundation Models (IFM) of MBZUAI, which is envisioned as a global initiative uniting AI talents from Abu Dhabi, Silicon Valley, and Paris. This French laboratory will integrate into one of three key AI centers designed to advance the next generation of foundational models and leverage their benefits across communities worldwide.
Established in Abu Dhabi, MBZUAI is a research university dedicated to advancing science through AI. Its mission is to empower the next generation of AI sector leaders, driving impactful innovation and applications through world-class education and interdisciplinary research. In 2025, MBZUAI will launch its first undergraduate program, a Bachelor of Science in AI that will encompass two distinct tracks: Business and Engineering. For further information, visit
