September: Disaster Preparedness Month
In Japan, the month of September is designated as Disaster Preparedness Month, culminating in significant initiatives aimed at raising awareness for both humans and animals during natural disasters. This year, the non-profit organizations "Human-Animal Symbiosis Center" (based in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture) and the "National Animal Evacuation Association" have officially begun distributing the 2026 edition of their Pet Disaster Preparedness Calendar. This endeavor aligns with the observance of September 1 - Disaster Prevention Day, and September 7 - Pet Disaster Prevention Day.
Through generous corporate sponsorship, a total of 20,000 copies are being distributed for free, with an ambitious target to reach 50,000 households via crowdfunding.
Purpose of the Pet Disaster Preparedness Calendar
The Pet Disaster Preparedness Calendar serves not only as a tool for pet owners but also aims to engage those without pets, fostering a societal awareness around ensuring safety for all animals during crises. The goal is to encourage preparedness and provide options for evacuation in times of emergency. Since its inception, the calendar has successfully distributed over 190,000 copies with support from more than 10 governmental agencies, over 150 companies, and contributions from more than 3,600 individuals nationwide.
Learning from Past Disasters
A tragic incident during the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake highlighted the importance of this initiative. A victim lost their life in a fire while attempting to shelter in a barn with their dog, failing to evacuate to proper accommodations. Japan faces frequent natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, and floods. However, challenges such as allergies, noise, and sanitation issues often prevent pets from being allowed in evacuation shelters. Therefore, the organizations are promoting the establishment of animal evacuation shelters to provide options that ensure the safety of both people and pets.
New Efforts in the 2026 Edition
The upcoming calendar edition will enhance workshop programs tailored for local disaster awareness activities, making them more accessible for communities. The final pages will include workshop materials specifically focusing on pet disaster preparedness.
In the words of the organization's chairman, Junji Okuda:
“The Pet Disaster Preparedness Calendar is an essential tool for fostering a culture of disaster preparedness in daily life. Our mission is to eliminate tragic incidents where individuals lose their lives due to being unable to evacuate with their pets. Together with government agencies and local communities, we strive to create a world where evacuating with pets is standard practice.”
Join the Cause
An informational session for prospective supporters of pet disaster initiatives is scheduled for September 10. This event emphasizes that disaster preparedness relies on collaboration, encouraging individuals, businesses, and organizations to contribute their strengths towards building an effective support system. The meeting will provide detailed insights into how to collaborate, including an in-depth explanation of the calendar’s features and opportunities for support.
