SOS Meals on Wheels Commemorates 60 Years of Service with Special Event in Oakland

Celebrating 60 Years of SOS Meals on Wheels

In a significant milestone, SOS Meals on Wheels (SOSMOW) is proud to announce its 60th anniversary, marked by a special event scheduled for October 17 at BLOC15 in Oakland, California. Founded in 1966, this Alameda County nonprofit has grown remarkably from delivering just 10 meals a day to serving over half a million meals annually to homebound seniors. The organization is dedicated to combating food insecurity and fostering connections for older adults who might otherwise feel isolated.

A Historical Overview
SOSMOW's journey began with community activist Emma Vargas, who started making meals in a church kitchen in Hayward. The organization officially became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1970 and joined the national Meals on Wheels network shortly thereafter. Over the decades, the scope of their work expanded, with meal services growing significantly from approximately 167,000 meals in 2012, to over 500,000 meals during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Growth and Community Impact
Since its inception, the organization has established itself as the largest senior nutrition provider in Alameda County, serving seniors in eight cities. In recent years, SOSMOW has also ramped up its services to meet the increasing demands of the community. Volunteers play a crucial role in this endeavor, having helped deliver more than 530,000 meals to around 3,000 seniors in the last year alone. Notably, they celebrated a significant milestone recently: delivering their 10 millionth meal.

Executive Director Charlie Deterline expressed gratitude towards the community, stating, "For 60 years, this community has shown support for its older neighbors in our kitchen, behind the wheel, and at the front door. This celebration serves as a thank you to everyone who contributed to our success and an invitation to continue meeting the growing needs of our seniors. We want to reassure older adults across Alameda County that we will be here for the next 60 years."

The Future of SOS Meals on Wheels
Looking ahead, the demand for SOSMOW’s services is expected to increase as the senior population in Alameda County continues to grow. However, financial uncertainties loom large, as federal and local funding is unpredictable. As funding cuts across the nonprofit sector threaten many organizations, SOSMOW emphasizes the importance of community support to maintain and expand its services.
