Tokyo Handaen Tea Company, renowned for its dedication to high-quality Japanese tea, has recently launched the pre-order for their much-anticipated seasonal offering, the "Hachijuhachiya" or "Eighty-Eight Nights" tea. This limited pre-order opened on
March 6 and will continue until
April 20. The tea will be shipped starting from
May 15. This annual offering is a perfect way to indulge in the seasonal flavors of Japan and is not to be missed!
About 'Hachijuhachiya'
Since its inception in
1947, the "Hachijuhachiya" has been established as the flagship product of Tokyo Handaen. Every year around mid-April, the company’s president,
Minoru Handa, journeys through Kagoshima, Shizuoka, and Kyoto to personally evaluate the leaf quality and weather conditions for that year. He carefully blends the premium first flush teas sourced from local producers, all selected as the best of the year. This meticulous process culminates in a tea that captures the refreshing flavors typical of this seasonal specialty.
The Essence of 'Hachijuhachiya'
The name "Hachijuhachiya" signifies the tea harvested on the 88th day after the start of spring, which usually falls around
May 2. This tea has been treasured since ancient times as a symbol of longevity and good fortune. It's enjoyed to celebrate the arrival of a new season and to wish for health and happiness throughout the year. Customers who purchase this exclusive tea will also receive information about a special offering of fresh tea, "Namamacha," available in October.
The Story Behind 'Namamacha'
Historically, during the Edo period, there were no modern methods of tea processing and distribution. The shogun would have the freshly harvested Uji teas transported to Edo Castle, where they were stored in cool places to prevent spoilage during the summer months. The term "Kuradashi Tea" originates from this practice. Tokyo Handaen's "Namamacha," which is a limited Kuradashi strain, undergoes a unique aging process. After being picked in May, the tea is stored unprocessed in cool temperatures, then roasted just before being released in autumn. This careful aging enhances its depth of flavor while keeping the vibrant characteristics reminiscent of spring’s freshly harvested tea.
