Happinet Logistics Takes Major Steps Towards Carbon Neutrality with Reusable Containers

Happinet Group's Commitment to Carbon Neutral Logistics

Happinet Holdings, through its subsidiary Happinet Logistics Services, is actively working towards minimizing its environmental impact in logistics. In a significant milestone, they announced a successful implementation of reusable folding containers, known as Oricons, which will reach 700 partner stores by September 2025.

Enhancing Efficiency and Reducing Waste

Oricons are eco-friendly, plastic containers designed for reutilization, enabling safe delivery of products without the need for additional cushioning materials. The initiative began in July 2022 at nine locations near Osaka, and it has successfully scaled up to 700 stores over a three-year period.

This transition to Oricon-based deliveries provides various benefits, including a decrease in the labor involved in unpacking products and a reduction in waste disposal, thereby significantly enhancing operational efficiency for partner stores. Impressively, the adoption rates for Oricon deliveries among the four subsidiaries of Happinet Group have reached approximately 70% in the Kanto area, 84% in Kansai, and 67% in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions.

In the fiscal year 2024, it is estimated that the company will reduce cardboard usage by approximately 168,332 sheets, achieving a CO₂ emission reduction of around 50%, which translates to about 122 tons of CO₂ emissions. This reduction is equivalent to the amount of CO₂ absorbed by approximately 13,600 cedar trees in one year.

Embracing Green Energy Solutions

Furthermore, to further strengthen its environmental commitment, Happinet announced in April 2023 that its logistics center in Funabashi has adopted the green power service provided by Mitsui Fudosan. By converting the facility's electricity supply to 100% renewable energy, the company has achieved a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions, estimating a decrease of around 180 tons annually from the center's power consumption of approximately 400,000 kWh.

Solar Panel Installation for Sustainable Power

In another step towards sustainability, Happinet has installed 915 solar panels on the rooftop of the Ichikawa Logistics Center in September 2024. This facility, opened in 2001, is a key logistics hub for the company and utilizes considerable energy due to its multi-story structure and various automation systems. The solar panels are expected to generate around 360 kW, which will cover 15% of the facility's electricity needs and potentially reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 150 tons per year.

Additionally, the installation of solar panels ensures energy supply continuity during emergencies, safeguarding against power outages during significant events such as earthquakes.

Future Goals for Green Logistics

Going forward, Happinet aims to expand the Oricon delivery system to 1,200 stores by 2028, further enhancing its efforts to lower environmental impact. The company is dedicated to perfecting its green logistics by focusing on various areas, including packaging material reduction, efficient transportation, optimal resource allocation, and energy-saving measures across logistics centers.
