Nikken Total Sourcing Launches Semiconductor Engineer Training Program at Tohoku University

Nikken Total Sourcing Launches Innovative Training Program

Nikken Total Sourcing Co., Ltd., based in Ota, Tokyo, is recognized as a 'human capital creation company' that harnesses diverse talent to create possibilities through its HR solutions. Beginning June 15, 2026, the company will initiate a hands-on training program for semiconductor engineers, leveraging facilities at Tohoku University’s Microsystems Fusion Research and Development Center, known as the 'Prototype Coin Laundry.' This program aims to address the pressing talent shortage in the semiconductor industry by providing engineers with practical, immersive learning experiences that utilize state-of-the-art academic research facilities.

Background and Objectives of the Training Program

The ever-growing demand for semiconductors, driven by the digitalization of various industries, is prompting rapid developments in Japan's domestic manufacturing base. However, the shortage of engineers equipped to handle complex process development and manufacturing technologies poses a significant challenge to the industry. To combat this issue, Nikken Total Sourcing is introducing a new training program that combines its long-established training expertise with cutting-edge academic facilities.

Features of the Hands-On Training Program

Conducted at the 'Prototype Coin Laundry' within the Jun-ichi Nishizawa Memorial Research Center at Tohoku University, this training program is designed to provide participants with more than just theoretical knowledge. By experiencing actual manufacturing processes, trainees will gain a concrete understanding of various stages of production, cultivating an awareness of quality control. The program encourages logical reasoning and problem-solving skills, ensuring participants understand the principles behind their actions.

Key Components of the Training

  • - Practical Training in a Clean Room: Participants will enter a spacious approximately 1,800 square meter clean room equipped with MEMS-focused semiconductor manufacturing tools, allowing them to internalize the stringent rules of a manufacturing environment.
  • - Hands-On Equipment Operation: Students will operate plasma CVD equipment to create silicon oxide films and measure film thickness, analyzing the relationship between conditions and outcomes. They will also gain experience in photoresist coating and film thickness measurement.
  • - Processing Design Exercises: By altering conditions, trainees will measure the thickness of oxides and resist films on processed wafers, compiling data for graph analysis and exploring optimal conditions.

Training Center Overview

The program will be conducted primarily at Nikken’s Sendai Engineering Training Center, where plans are in place to train around 120 individuals annually for various roles in the semiconductor sector. Experienced instructors will lead a comprehensive 40-day training regimen, covering electrical fundamentals, semiconductor element characteristics, front-end and back-end manufacturing technologies, statistical methods, and quality management. The addition of this academic hands-on curriculum will enhance the skill levels and educational content for trainees, preparing them for successful careers in a rapidly evolving industry.
